travling with a shot gun

could i keep a empty shotgun in the trunk of my car while travling from Florida to New Jersey? many thanks

  Fed and state laws yes you can
  Not sure about city ord,like in newyork city??
  I go hunting all over and never give it a thought.
  Cased in the trunk and shells in the back seat packed away
  Are you hunting,moving,selling?? or just road trip

  And don't forget to store your ammo (if you're taking any) in a separate section of the car so that you cannot access both easily.

  I believe according to new jersey law, it is illegal.

  If it is registered in NJ, it is legal. Federal law says you may have a gun in the trunk as long as you are passing through heavily regulated states like NJ, but if it is your destination or if you stay over night you are not protected by the law.

  BUZZ: Wrong answer. First NJ has no mandatory gun registration. Second, you would be covered by the safe passage law if you were traveling through NJ, but since you stated your final destination is NJ, my good friend Salzo is correct. It is illegal.

  Transporting Firearms During Travel
  A provision of federal law serves as a defense to state or local laws which would prohibit the passage of persons with firearms in interstate travel.
  Notwithstanding any state or local law, a person shall be entitled to transport a firearm from any place where he may lawfully possess and transport such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and transport such firearm if the firearm is unloaded and in the trunk. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm shall be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

  I also read somewhere that it is a good idea to carry a copy of the law, because NYC cops usually don't know about it, even though it has been in effect for almost two decades.

  From when I used to live in Trenton and drove to my shooting place in Middlesex county. It must first be encased in something I was told by a state trooper that in an emergency a green trashbag will do. The ammo and the gun cannot be both reachable from where they are at the same time. So gun in the Trunk ammo in the back seat.If you are going hunting have a valid permit and if you are in a shooting club carry your ID.Most urban cops will leave you alone, they have real crime to deal with. The young suburban one's can be a challenge.
