SMITH & WESSON MODEL 29

I have a Smith & Wesson that I would like to have a value put on. The barrell is 8 3/8" long and it has a Leupold M8-4X EXTENDE.R

This has what I believe to be ivory? grips but not sure.

This is in very good condition with just 1 spot of rust but I do not want to touch it.

I have pictures that I can e-mail you if you would like to see it.

    Take off the grips and heat up a needle and touch the back of one of the grips.If the grip melts it's plastic.[:)]

    Snoopydog: I'll pass along a tip that Hangfire gave me. FLITZ metal polish will take off rust without damage to the finish. Assuming there is still finish under the rust, FLITZ won't take it off, and if the finish is already gone there is no harm done. I used it on a blue K frame S&W and put it back in new condition.     Couple things here. First test the grips ... I think you'll find that they are not real ivory. Second, you 8 3/8th inch barrel narrows the market interest ... 4 and 6 inch sell faster. Third you have a high end scope but the 4x is really less popular than the 2x. But, with all of that said you have a good hunting length and the scope to make it all work. If I were to place this revolver for auction I'd suggest a starting price of $650. If I were selling this at a gun show I'd put $725 on it, and be prepard to settle for a couple bucks less than that.

    If you have the original grips, or if you can pick up a pair of Pachymer (sp?) gripper style for $10-15 you'd be better off changing out the grips and selling the others seperately.

    Regardless of what you decide to do ... be patient, you most likely will not sell this revolver very quickly unless you are willing to settle for a lot less than the prices suggested.

    snoop- I don't know what the value would be, but I'll provide an unsolicited comment- I have had a 6'M29 on which I installed a Leupold 2xEER about 10 years ago. I could not ask for a better handgun for use on deer size game at a distance of less than 125 yards. I carry it in one of those bandolier style holsters so when I am placing hunters on stands and otherwise organizing things, I'm not encumbered with a rifle, but if in the course of all this walking I see a deer, I have the option of doing some hunting. I recommend your pistol highly to anyone wanting to use it for it's intended purpose.
