22-250 Load Recommendations

I recently purchased a Savage 110 in 22-250 from GB basically for my 11 year old daughter to shoot a centerfire rifle with little recoil, and to do a little varmit hunting out in New Mexico. For white-tail deer, what is the recommended bullet type and load for a 22-250?

I realize the 22-250 is often is considered a little light for white-tail and shot placement is critical, but just wanted some ideas from the Forum on load recommendations. I have found some 55-grain Rems with a PSP bullet, but didn't know whether a hollow point or ballistic tip was available for a 22-250, or if a hotter load with heavier grain bullet would be recommended for white-tail.

    70 grain sp with as much Hodgdon Varget as you feel comfortable putting in the case

    I'm a little unclear...are you looking for load maps for loading the rounds yourself, or are you looking for a factory load? The heaviest factory load I know of off hand is the Remington 60 gr. PSP. Even when handloading, I think you might find ANY 22 caliber round a bit light on the Ft. Lbs. scale!

    A 22-250 will do your daughter just fine on deer if you choose or reload the correct bullet. I would steer clear of the ballistic tips, because as accurate as they are, they are a little nasty when they hit, and penetration is a little low because of it. A good heavy bullet is called for here. A 53 gr Barnes X bullet is good, as is the new Sierra 65gr. Winchester has a 60gr PP that will work very well for deer also. Just find a good heavy weight that the rifle likes and
    find her a deer to put down and all will be fine.[:D]

    Hey bnailon regardless of what a lot of people will say 22/250 will do well on deer and antelope with the right bullets. I personaly have taken a lot of deer with the 22/250 and an antelope at 400 yards . I started off not using the right bullets and knew it so I only took heart/lung or head neck shots ( 50 gr. spire points) these killed tremendously well but left no room for an awkward angle. My bullet of choice is a 52 or 53 grain Barnes X bullet. This thing works fantastic! On the 400 yard shot on a New Mexico Antelope it did tons of damage to his lungs and exited! This same bullet I load for a friends son for Texas whitetails in a .223 and for my buddy's 22/250 and you should hear them brag about deer dropping like they were struck by lightning. I load that Barnes bullet with 37-38 grains of H380 and it is really accurate in my gun. With the Barnes bullets clean your gun often seem to foul sooner than other bullets. I recently saw Cabela's offering 22/250 shells loaded with 50 or 55 grain Nosler partitions, those might do well also. Stay away from any and all varmint style soft points and hollow points or the semi round nose bullets as well, these expand too rapidly and don't penetrate as deep. Once again Barnes X, lots of damage and they still penetrate deep enough to exit. e-mail me if you need more info.

    Please follow the cookbook loads. Info found here might be wonderful, but then again I wouldnt even shoot anyone elses reloads. Dont give your daughter someones idea of a load. There are many fine free books that will give you the correct load... FOLLOW THEM TO THE TEE.

    You can buy a Lee handloader on Ebay for about $10. They don't require a press, and all you need besides that is a scale. Then practice with the factory loads, and then load those empty cases for deer. Then you can get a better bullet,and not to mention the price difference. Reloading for the 22-250 is the only way to go. I think it is one of the most important calibers to handload. I still would prefer at least a 243 for deer, but the 22-250 is a good caliber. A good bullet and extreme care in shot placement, and it will do the job on about anything.

    I managed a 1/4" 3 shot group at 100yds with the Winchester Value Pack(#USA222502) with my Remington 700VS, I also had good success with the Remington Premier Partition 60gr Nosler(#PRP2250RA).
