USPS Regulations

Will someone please direct me to a USPS site that gives the information regarding shipping a broken firearm to a factory repair station.

The PO clerks insist that a FFL is required.

I am certain the clerks are wrong.

    "A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun"


    Here is the GunBroker page that answers your question in great detail.

    Save yourself some aggravation, ship your handgun by FedEx, if your shipping a long gun you can use the USPS.

    Don't use Publication 52. It has some errors in it, such as the definition for an antique firearm. Use the Domestic Mail Manual, which is what the postal clerks use. The part covering mailing of firearms in in Section C024.

    The only time an FFL is required to mail a firearm is when mailing handguns. You don't need one to mail rifles or shotguns.

    You still need the receiving ffl dealers licence even when mailing a rifle. This is a batf law and without it you can and most likely will be in deep shi*.

    ok...go to this link http://pe.usps.gov/ and type in "firearms" in the box. Then select "DMM C024 Other Restricted or Nonmailable Matter" and look at paragraphs 1.5 and 1.6. They will tell you what you need to know.
    (you will need someone to have an FFL on your end and then fill out the paperwork saying that it is going to a manufacturer.) I would make sure to send it via Priority with insurance and signature required.

    Sorry wyodeacon, but some of your information is incorrect.

    A non-licensee may mail a long gun directly to an FFL or manufacturer for repair or customizing; he does not need an FFL on his end. The USPS requires no "paperwork" to do this; the only firearms-related forms that they have are restricted to use by FFLs.

    If you have a problem ask to talk to the Postmaster, generally they have been arround long enough that they know what is going on. Longguns for repair are shipped like anything else, no paperwork whatsoever needed. I always insure them.

    You are correct. I was making an assumption that this was a handgun. My bad.
