Setting Headspace On Model 70

How is headspace set on a Winchester Model 70. If the headspace is wrong, how would it be corrected if it is too much and how would it be corrected if it were too little?

    Hello The normal way to set head space if you are replaceing a factory barrel with another factory barrel is To first install the new barrel and see if the index mark line up with the receiver. This would be the sights would be straight up If you luck out and this part is correct and you than also luck out and the head space is within specks With GO NOGO gauge you are home free. If the head space is to short then you need a finish reamer to deepen the chamber if too much head space then you need to turn back the shoulder of barrel one full turn untill the index marks line up and then check and use finish reamer . Any good gunsmith can do the job but you would need go nogo guages and a lathe.

    If you are a handloader you can adjust the cartridge's shoulder height to compensate for out of specification headspace.

    Hi guys,
    Depends too, on whether the gun is a new or old M70. The older guns, and newer "Classics" have cone breeches which complicates things a little since you will have to rework the extractor cut if its necessary to set the shoulder back.
