Does size matter? on barrel length.
I have wanted a carbine length .308, but have read people arguing about the merits of 24" over 22" inch barrels. I was thinking of 18" to 20" of barrel. What difference does this lenght matter?

Not sure if the burn lengths of a 308 would stand up to the same as a 22RF.
But you will loose some velocity with a shorter barrel, and a lot depends on just to many variations to give a reasonable answer. It could vary from 35- 60 fps per inch depending on the caliber, more or less. Inside of a couple hundred yards I doubt anything could tell the velocity difference from a few inches less barrel length, except for a cronograph.[:D]

The 22 barrel cut-off and chronograph then repeat was done in the 70's. I am well aware that the 22 round is built for short barrels as it is used in rifles and pistols alike.
The difference in any round depends on the type of powder used. A fast burning powder will result in reduced velocities in longer barrels and a slow burning powder will result in reduced velocities in shorter barrels. With slow burning powders in a short barrel, some of the powder is wasted in muzzle flash and unburned powder expelled.
I used to reload and this is common knowledge to reloaders.
Now with my failing eyesight, I can only shoot factory rounds and am asking the younger more up-to-date shooters.
Using factory ammo, how a shorter barrel affects shooting in a 308?
Muzzle blast must be louder and brighter, velocity has to be reduced, and I wonder about accuracy? How much do you give up for a carbine?

As stated above, 25 to 50 fps per inch of barrel length is a good rule of thumb. If on the other hand you want a carbine length rifle but full barrel lenght also, then the answer is the Ruger single shot series of rifles, or others like them. The single shot receiver is often three or four inches shorter then a bolt or lever action and so a carbine length package is easily put together. The downside is that they are often heavier and slower to get a second shot off, unless you practice alot. 0 -
I have a 21" hart tube on a 308,..and it goes 2710fps with 168gr factory winchester supreme match ammo. That's plenty of speed. I dropped whitetail all summer at 300+yds with the 21" barrel. Plenty of power leftover at 300yds too. I would have no reservations at taking that load to 500yds on whitetail.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
