38 auto questions
I have a 1903 colt pocket hammer 38 auto. Is this ammo suitable for use in it?

Emmit, have you had your Colt checked by a competent gunsmith for safety? If not, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. That is the correct ammo for a Colt 1903 rimless smokeless. However, in my weapons that are between 80 and 108 years old, I load my own reduced loads to ensure my safety, and the safety of my prized relic.
In my experience, a Colt 1903 Pocket Hammer can bring $1200 to $2300 dependant on condition. Please proceed cautiously.

One of my local gun dealers has examined it and says he doesn't see any problems with it. I got most of a box of 38 auto ammo with the gun. I've shot only about 6 rounds through it and it works great. I don't know how much I'll shoot it, but I hate to miss a chance to pick up suitable ammo. 0 -

The ammo you reference should be suitable for your 1903 Colt. This is an obsolete cartridge and is not being loaded by any major ammunition maker. It was introduced in 1900 for Colt semi-auto pistols. No guns have been designed for this cartridge since 1928.
This round should not be confused with the .38 Super Auto which is not suitable for your pistol.
I assume you have read the caveat by the seller indicating this ammo is for collecting purposes only.

That ammo is suitable for use in your gun. That said, if I owned your gun, I would not shoot it. It is just too valuable and too weak a design to mess around with. My opinion.

Let me get my two cents in here. As many of you know, I collect the model 1903 Colts and in fact carry a .38acp as a CCW weapon.
The advice on having any old gun examined by a gunsmith is wise. Once this is done, firing factory .38acp out of it should cause no problem. The problem comes from re-loads that are too hot for the gun. Factory ammo, although getting harder to find is still out there. Whenever I haunt gunshows, I always look for .38acp and buy whatever I find. I probably have enough now to out last me, LOL.
As to the value of your gun, I believe the prices quoted here are a little generous, however if anyone would like to offer me those prices, I am ready to sell. These guns were very well made by Colt and properly cared for will give great service for a long time. Enjoy it.

Since the demensions of the .38 super and the .38 auto are the same (you cannot shoot .38 super out of a .38 ACP pistol!), couldn't you just make a very lightly powered load using .38 super brass if you were looking for ammo for this guy's gun? 0 -

Greetings - I am looking for a set of four grip screws for a 1903 Colt Pocket Model (38 acp). Any sources provided would be appreciated. I have checked wth Numrich Arms (Gun Part Inc.) but they are out of stock.

The .38 Super is semi rimmed and the .38 ACP is not.It may not work,in fact I don't think it will .I used to make brass for the 9mm Largo from .38 Super brass I had to trim the rim.[:)]0 -
