WWII Japanese pistol
my father has a Japanese pistol from WWII. He acquired it when a Japanese suicide plane hit their ship. He also has some plane parts from the cockpit (gauge covers with Japanese writing) and some other things. But about the pistol, where is the best place to sell this and find out the value? Does anyone have suggestions?. thanks.

Welcome to the Ask the Experts Forum and becoming a Member of the <gunbroker.com> family....First We need to know what pistol you have..? The Japanese Pilots carried 3 or 4 differant Pistols... so A complete and total discription of you gun would help Us to pin the tail on the Donkey....If You can Post a Photo or at the least send me one I'll be able to help You out......Best.....

If your dad is still alive and can write down some of the provinance of the pistol. i.e. ship he was on, the date his ship was hit, his job on board and any photos taken of the attack it would add immeasurably to the value of the pistol. I'd have to say that a pistol from one of the "divine wind" pilots would sell for at least five times what you'd pay for a pistol without provinance. Beach 0 -
Not to be a doubter but it seems those planes hit with a fiery force and had dynamite in them also. Not much left on impact,,but who knows. Also the planes were a "one way trip" and don't know if they gave the "pilots" any sidearms as everything was in short supply. nambu 0 -

I'm sure you know that not all carrier based planes (if any) left the decks as Kamikazi. The carrier based pilots were too valuable to waste in such attacts. HOWEVER, the individual pilots sometimes did crash their aircraft due to damage and/or wounds sustained in an attack.
I do agree with you assesment of the no pistol rule. Small daggers for throat slitting were on the Kamikazi's.
Jymrp. It is imperative that you aquire the name of the ship, date, and any additional information as to the destruction of the Zero.
The date on the pistol must also jive with the date of the air attack. It obviously can't be later.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, TOLD TO ME TODAY BY MY FATHER, RICHARD.Thank you to all who posted... I have more info. My father, Richard, was a Pointer on a 350 Gun. It was January, 9 days after the invasion of the Phillipines (not sure the year) he was in the US Navy Armed Guard serving on the Cargo Liberty Ship the SS.Edward M. Wescott. They were carring troops and high octane gas on the deck. They were in a battle with Japanese planes. They started on 18 second fuses and were down to 2 second fuses and the projector froze in his barrell. He was told to get out of his seat and get the other guy next to him, out of his seat as the plane was coming in (other guy was Jack, from Colorado Springs(maybe Lockhardt or something similar was his last name)). They knew plane was going to hit the ship, They both dove down and laid into the gun tub. The plane hit the water and ricocheted onto the deck, bending the seat that Richard was sitting in. Richard got shrapnel in his leg and Jack was not injured. Richard received the purple heart. The Pilots body landed ON the ship but his head landed elsewhere. The gun has a bent barrell. It has been in a box in the basement every since and I just found it while cleaning the basement and asked my father about it. Also in the box was a Japanese gas mask(falling apart) and some large bullets from a machine gun, also taken from the plane, and some plane parts, gauges. My dad originally has the machine gun also but gave it to one of his buddies on ship, but he still has some of the bullets. the end.0 -

I'd think you'd want to hold on to the pistol as part of the family history. But if you are selling this material, I'd be interested in the ammunition. I have some ammo customers who are big into Japanese sidearms. If you want to send me an email, I can hook you up with them and they can probably give you a good idea of the value.

Somehow, I think all the stuff belongs together as a collection, along with a letter from your father.
Separately, it's a damaged, not very valuable pistol plus busted airplane parts.0 -

It sure sounds like the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944. There were Imperial carrier aircraft as well as land bases assets involved in that action.
The ships name would have to be researched and I'm sure jymrp could do that on his own via the internet.
I would vote to keep the stuff together in the family myself, but if you want to sell some aircraft parts, I would have an interest as long as I could get a copy of your dad's story.

Its a Type 14.....Nagoya Arsenal...The kids got a real Keeper....Hope He Shadow Boxes it and Hangs it on the Wall...He needs to have the History Written and Typed and Posted with the Signature of his Dad and have it Notorized....for Posterity........!
