What the heck is this?

I recently acquired a military rifle. It is a Mauser Modelo Argentino 189L. Under all that is the name Berlin. It is chambered for 7.65. I assume it is a military crest in front of the bolt. Does anybody know anything about this? Thanks

Hi dirtcop,

Mauser made contract rifles for countries all over the world. This is one of them probably.

You probably have an Argentine contract Mauser rifle. I cannot tell you the model exactly without more description. But based on the caliber of 7.65 Argentine it could be a model 1909. There are four different models of 1901 including a sniper version, the most valuable, a calvary carbine, a mountain carbine, and a rifle.

A photo would help to indicate the marking and the overall configuration of the rifle.

well, if it is stamped 1891, I would wager it is a model 1891 Argentine, not a 1909. Does it have a protruding mag? IF so, 1891; if not, 1909. Correct caliber is 7.65X54 Argentine.

If it is not a 1909, it may be the Model 1891 as Jonk states.

You can also just take a look at the extractor. If it is in a milled slot on the bolt it's an 1891, if the standard claw extractor it is something later.
