colt lighting
I have a colt lighting 38-40 shoots fine but feeds poorly i am loading swc 175 cast bullets i think maybe the swc doesn't feed right should i go to a rn bullet. also i know little about colts but it won't load trough the gate with the action closed is this normal? thanks Kevin

Kms..welcome! Before you proceed any further, click on the edit-the little "pencil" symbol.
You will notice your photos are in computer code with brackets[] added.
Place your curser between the [/img] symbol, and the [img]symbol that immediately follows it, and hit the "enter" button twice. You have just stacked your photos vertically. Hit the "post changes" button. Now, down to business. Loading procedure: Open action (slide pump fully to the rear). Insert cartridges into the loading gate while the action is open. Work action two times..just like a browning light machine gun To unload: Action must be closed, and hammer lowered onto a live round each time you want to eject an unfired round. Best to shoot the gun until it's empty before leaving the firing line. Do Not Load At Home!! The lowering of the hammer onto a live round (the only way to eject a round) is inherently dangerous. Tidbit: Action doesn't like "pusseyfooting". Action must be worked vigorously, or the possibility of a jam is increased. Rifle is very OAL sensitive. Don't exceed the OAL on the reloads, and best if you keep the OAL a few .000's less than maximum published OAL. Best, Joe EDIT-Text Compression[/img]0 -
The Lightning chamber is cut for original profile black powder bullets.
Full depth rifling comes right up to the case mouth meaning you'll have to slam the slide to start current style lead bullets into the rifling.
The chamber needs to be throated if you want to use bullets with any bore diameter band in front of the case.
PS: 44-40 brass becomes 38-40 brass in the regular 38-40 FL die.0 -

I have been in the market for a large frame lightning for awhile. The medium frames (44,38,32) start at 500 for a nonoriginal beater, typical examples like yours seem to be 800-1000, and then they climb from there with more bluing/less wear. 44-40 brings the most, 32-20 the least. Your forearm wood looks nice. The checkering seems gone but it looks like there is some figure in the wood. Forearms on these seem to often be replaced or really beat, yours isnt. Kind of a low serial number. Any idea when it was made? 0
