Winchester model 56??

I have a chance to buy a model 56, but, the barrel is pretty much shot. Ser# number is 4 digit, I think 11xx. Will having the barrel lined totaly kill the value? It has the base for a Lyman peep on it and I can get the rest of the parts for that.The guy wants $300.00. What do the experts think?

    If a model 56 needs to have its barrel religned, it's shot to begin with where any collector value is concerned, unless it has an extremely rare feature or two. It all depends on what you want in a model 56. What makes you think the barrel is pretty much shot? Some people see the shallow rifling in the bores of most Winchester .22s and they wrongly think the bore is not good when it fact it is excellent. The model 56 and model 57 are quite likely among the most accurate of any .22 rifle ever made.

    The man who has it stated right off the barrel is shot,I know him well. The bore is scratched badly and the rifleing is almost nonexistent at the muzle.

    Rifling on .22 Winchesters appear to be non-existent to most people who are not accustomed to seeing the shallow rifling in their bores, but they are familiar with other makes of .22s and their deeper rifling, which causes them to believe the bore is shot practically smooth. This is what I meant about people seeing shallow rifling as being almost smooth like and wrongly thinking that the bore is no good. I am not saying this is the case with the one you are inquiring about though. The "scratching" is a different matter though.

    for what its worth,,, I have a winchester 61 with 0 rifling left in the barrel and it will still kill a squirrel at 75yds with the original sights,,,, so shoot it and have fun with it,,, thats what they were made for.

    The model 56 is a very collectible hard to find Winchester in any condition. Relining the barrel would probably not decrease the value nor add to it. I wouldn't try to refinish or restore anything else on it cosmetically, that will hurt the value.
