I have two Ruger handguns I am selling.I had two replys from buyers claiming to be FFL's telling me it was ok for me a non FFL to ship them.My understandng is I cannot do this.Even if it were legal,no common carrier around here would do it.I know this topic has been beaten to death here many times.I told both the buyers I am too cute to go to fedral prison.

    A non-FFL CAN send a handgun to an FFL, via UPS or Fedex. I find Fedex much easier to deal with, they seem to know the regs much better than the UPS people.

    I believe you can ship and receive for repairs but on a sale to a bona fide FFL a problem may occur if they were returned to you.

    Unless state laws specifies otherwise (New York state comes to mind for handguns) only the party receiving the firearm needs to hold an FFL.

    If using fed/ex they require over night shipping for any guns and it can get pretty pricey. On a wim I recently sold a rifle ahd had it priced over night by UPS it would have cost $200.00 to ship it so just be aware. You as a non FFL can ship to a FFL just make sure you get a copy of their FFL to cover your ass.

    Rifles and shotguns are in a different category as far as the law is concerned, regarding shipping. You can legally ship them through the Post Office as long its to a FFL. Priority Mail is the best way. You don't have to aggravate yourself with UPS or FedEx.

    (B1) To whom may an unlicensed person transfer firearms under the GCA? [Back]

    A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may loan or rent a firearm to a resident of any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may sell or transfer a firearm to a licensee in any State. However, a firearm other than a curio or relic may not be transferred interstate to a licensed collector.

    Except for some of the earliest Rugers your guns could be sold to a type 01 FFL, which is a dealer. Type 03 FFLs, Collector of Curio and Relics could not receive them. Most of the problems about an unlicensed individual selling by mail comes from the legality of the shipping or return of the firearm and have been address by the others.

    Don't know about UPS, as I don't use them anymore, but Fedex only requires overnight for handguns. Long guns can go ground, I just shipped one for $25.00 Fedex has it right in their reg book.

    I shipped with ups once. cost $60 to send a glock 22 overnight AND i had to drive an hour to a dedicated ups store to do it. the local ups driver said he couldn't accept it for shipment.
    no i just get an ffl to ship for me. i pay the shipping plus $25. everybody's happy.

    +1000 ... easiest way to deal with it.

    But, if you do decide to ship it yourself, get the FFLs magic numbers to do a EZCheck and only ship to the address listed on the ATF website.
