.44 Magnum ballistics...

I have just purchased a Model 29 with a 3 " barrel.

1) Does anyone know where I can find ballistic info on this snubby ??

2) I am having it Mag-Na-Ported. Can anyone tell me where I can find ballistic info on the short barrel with holes in it ??

    Doug,

    Do you know about what grain bullet your interested in? Using this link from Buffalo Bore, I would say you would be right around 1200 fps(proably a little under) with the 255 gr. bullet they use.

    As a rough rule of thumb, you gain/lose roughly 50-75 FPS per barrel inch from a pistol.

    So you can probably take the ballistics from a 4" bbl gun and subtract that much.

    Edit: Ultimately, if you REALLY want to know, the only way to know for sure is to chronograph the loads you're interested in from the actual gun you're shooting.

    But as mentioned above (and below), the real world difference between a 3" and 4" bbl is going to be pretty small. Whatever you were shooting would never know the difference.

    As to Magnaporting, it probably does bleed off a FEW fps, but the effect is likely so minimal compared to ordinary shot-to-shot variation, it would probably take statistical analysis to measure it. I wouldn't worry about this either. Variation in cylinder gap and land diameter between revolvers is probably more significant.

    Personally, I'd be more concerned with increased FLASH and NOISE after magnaporting, rather than whatever minimal effect it might have on ballistics.

    As for the holes in the barrl (the Magnaport treatment, NOT the big hole that runs stem to stern) they shouldn't affect velocity any more than barrel to barrel variations you would expect to find from other "identical" revolvers.

    I have a Lew Horton Mod24 3". Love it. It handles well with service grips. I think you will love the size. I also own a 629 Mountain Gun 4" It has Hogue grips. Just a suggestion you may want to try some 44spcl ammo before having it ported. BTW- The 3" size is much more user friendly. An N Frame Smith is a real Mans gun[^]

    As for 44 ballistics- Most all revolver specs are based on a 4" VENTED barrel. 3" should be close

    +1. I'd be concerned with the muzzle blast and flash and would try some toned down loads before Magnaporting it. There will be plenty even without it.
    A reduced load of 20 gr 2400 with a 235 gr HP bullet is a lot more pleasant to shoot and still serious.
    Reloaders should have at least a cheapo chronograph.

    I previously had a 3" 29, ported, and a 3" 629 unported.

    Mag-Na-Port made a believer outta me.
