Shipping Ammo to Alaska... continued
Call the UPS hotline 800-554-9964. I called them today to confirm my earlier thread comments. They will tell you ammo can't be shipped unless you have a hazardous contract with them and getting it is a real big deal. Ammo is considered hazardous, thus the ORM-D designation and requirement. However to ship it in the lower 48 requires no special packaging or hazardous fees just the proper marking on the outside of the box. There are Federal statues involved and the shipper, is required to present only allowable shipment. The fact that a clerk might not realize that a package is prohibited does not and will not absolve you of liability.

When someone generalizes "shipping to Alaska" as if one solution or size fits all, they only do so because they have no idea of what they speak.
UPS charges next day air rates for everything they ship to Alaska with no guarentee of next day service (most times they don't deliver on next month).
UPS sends everything from lower 48 shippers with an Alaska address to Anchorage. If someone sends a package for my address, when it gets to Anchorage it has traveled twice as far as needed, 1/2 of in the wrong direction! I have ordered & specifyed USPS priority mail only to find a month later my package has been sent UPS, & is on the truck in Anchorage for delivery (& I'm 800 miles away).
I have recieved packages from FedX that they sort in Anchorage & put in the mail rather than send them back or throw them away as UPS must be doing.
Please consider;
Alaska is about as wide as the lower 48. From the western tip of the Aleutian islands to Hyder, Ak. it is 48 1/2% longitude. Approx. 3,345 statuate miles.
Alaska is nearly as far across from north to south as the lower 48. From Point Barrow to Amchitka Island is 21% latitude. That's approx. 1,450 statuate miles.
In all that expanse there are very few roads so most transportation is by water or air. The good news is we can do it. In all dealings with an Alaska address, ask "how do you want this shipped?" They are paying for shipping same as for the goods. Makes sense to me the customer should get what he wants if he is willing to pay for it!
I said before & at the risk of sounding like I'm repeating myself "If you will tell us where in Alaska, we cal tell you the best solution to the shipping dilema. It may be cost prohibitave to ship one lone box of ammo, but we will never know 'till we know 'WHERE in Alaska'.

You miss the point I believe. The UPS hazardous helpline/ hotline I noted ( ORM-D is hazardous) was very clear. Under no circumstances could I ship ammo from any lower 48 state to AK. I agree there are ways to get ammo there but not by UPS. Fedex is not even suppose to take ammo at all unless it is dealer to dealer with a pickup at the shipping dealer. I have gotten ammo to AK via a barge in WA. However shipping ammo direct to AK is without a doubt illegal and prohibited 0 -

Try again...tell that to Mrs. Palin. The only missing the point is you! You are, once again, not the only one who ships ammo, or ORM-D materials! There is nothing ILLEGAL about shipping ammo to Alaska or any other place in the USA. There might be some policies of the shipping agencies you use to get it there, but nothing against the law. There is ammo in Alaska, and it had to get there somehow.

TSR is WRONG, call the number I posted if you even think of sending ammo by UPS. This is a continuation of an earlier post where it was pretty obvious the person wanted to used a common carrier. Also review the complicated UPS web site which discussed the federal statute and policies. It is people like TSR who knowingly break the law that cause our antigun enemies to try to stop all private transfer of ammo especially if something bad happens in the air 0 -

I spent 8 years up there.
If I ordered ammo from one of the big mail order places, it generally took about a month for it to arrive.
It went to Anchorage by boat and then another trip to me by either boat or bushplane.
I know I have also sent ammo to my brother via UPS with ORMD on it and it arrived in about 10 days. Had to have had some air involved.
As long as I ship it with ORMD marked and declare it as ammo, I don't care how it gets there. I have followed their rules.

If you'd take the time to read the regulation you will find that marking it ORM-d etc DOES NOT absolve you. The shipper meaning you are responsible to present non prohibited items. I am sure you would be in serious trouble if your package of ammo was shipped either from AK or to AK and it was discovered. Call the phone number I provided. Some people have no problem breaking the law assuming it is a low risk of being caught. I wouldn't do it0 -

I can get on a plane and fly nationally with ammo,6 lbs in checked baggage, and internationally I believe with 11 pounds. I can ship a case of ammo by next day air accross the lower 48, so it has NOTHING to do with not being able to put ammo on a plane. As long as you are willing to play by the shippers rules, and pay their price, it can ship any where in the world...UPS slogan, by the way.
Just someone needs to swat the fly buzzing the forum saying it is ILLEGAL, when it is not. There are more than UPS out there to ship also. His rant that I am doing things ILLEGAL, is proposterous, as he knows not what he talks about. The mods need to reel this one in!0 -

I am getting reports of nasty e-mails being exchanged (why I get the privilege of getting an e-mail about this is a mystery since I never once looked in on this topic) so lets put this one to bed. 0 -
I don't care who said what or who started it, we are finished as of now. This is beginning to look more like General Discussion where two guys square off and then attempt to drag the whole board down. It won't happen here, I can assure you of that.
