S & W .44 Magnum ?

I was willed a Smith & Wesson , .44 Magnum, Model 629-1 , with a 6" barrel. The serial number prefix is "AHY" and then 4 digits. I went to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson - 3rd Edition and could not pinpoint the date the gun was made, somewhere between 1982 and 1988 ? Can anyone get me closer to the real date ? In my readings it stated that the company was going through a transition in the early 80's and the gun might have some issues regarding quality. This was regarding a "pinned barrel" and "counter-bore cylinders" that when a magnum load was fired the cylinder would unlock and rotate backwards when the hammer was cocked. Does this gun have that problem ? The gun is in excellent condition, it is in a cardboard box but no instruction sheet can anyone give me it's approximate worth ? Thanks for any help.

    As a 29-1, your gun should be pinned and recessed. Even if it wasn't, it is still a first rate firearm considering the condition of the gun of course.

    You have a first class shoot'en-arn. I own several Smith's & they all perform.

    For answers to your concerns, call S&W at 1 800 331 0852 M thru F 8:00 to 8:00 eastern time.

    If there are problems with your gun, they are the ones that can tell you & will have info. on any recalls if such should apply.

    Best I can determine is 86/87 as it was made after AHC (Jan 86) and before AVB (Jul 87).
    The endurance package started at model 629-2E (1988). Unless you are going to shoot full power heavy weight bullets (300gr.) it should not be an issue.
    Value is about $600.

    It's a 629-1, not 29-1.
    While the 29-1 was P&R, only the 629 no dash was both P&R.

    That is absolutely correct. I have a 629-1 made in 1981, and the barrel is not pinned, nor the cylinder recessed.
