College-aged hunter looking to trade up?
Hello All,
I am a college-aged hunter looking to trade in some shotguns for a new SBEII, and i was wondering if i could get an honest appraisal of some of the guns that me and my father has (that he doesn't want), cause you just cant completely trust those gun dealers at the sporting goods stores.
The three guns that i have for offering are:
1. Charles Daly National Wildlife Turkey Federation 12ga Semi -- Camouflage
This first shotgun is a synthetic, camo-covered 12 gauage semi from Charles Daly that i won at a NWTH raffle. Pretty good shape, a few chips of that camo-paint-stuff but other then that good condition (I actually hunt with my guns), includes NWTH madallion, box, chokes, paperwork. Takes 3in shells or shorter.
2. Benelli Nova, Ducks Unlimited edition, Black synthetic stock
My dads gun, he won it at a DU raffle, hates the damn thing, and gave it to me. Its a cool gun, but personally i would rather have an SBEII. Great condition. Has DU logo embossed into the stock, etc etc. Takes 3.5" Shells.
3. REALLY old marlin goose gun. Been in the family forever. HUGE barrel, probably one of the most unique shotguns i've ever seen. Bolt Action, with 3 (or is it 4?) round shell magazines that feed through the bottom. Can hit a bird thats waaaay far out there with that thing. I think my father said that he picked it up from original owner, who bought it in the 60's. I was hoping that it would be somewhat of a rarity, but *shrug*.
Hopefully this can eat a lot of $$ out of the cost of a trade in, but i'm interested in seeing what you guys think
P.S: We would never sell it, but my father has an old 10ga Double Barrel (side by side) that was his fathers, and i have always been curious how rare a gun like that is now-a-days. Any thoughts?

underbyte,
Welcome to the forum! Since no else has chimed in yet, there are really only two responses to your question as it stands:
#1. Good, quality close-up pictures are necessary for anyone to offer more than VERY broad ballpark figures; broad enough to be basically useless for your needs, and,
#2. If you go to the auction side and do a search for similar guns you can get an idea of what other pieces in approximately the same condition are drawing.
Good luck,0 -
I would recommend you sell those guns privately or on auction here.
You will get screwed trying to trade those in at a gun shop.
Gunshop would probably pay you following for those:
1. $150 to $175
2. $200 to $250
3. $50
Charles Daly semi auto's were sold brand new retail for $275.
I don't know what the Nova's go for but would guess $450 to $600 new.
Those Bolt Action shotguns just don't sell well. They are actually very comon. Shop I frequent has a load of them. I could probaly buy 3 or 4 for $200 total.
Figure a gun shop is going to want to make at least $100 or more on any gun they buy or take in trade.
Edit:
+1 to what Lee said. Keep all those and buy a Benelli Super Black Eagle with cash. Never sell a gun that's been in the family. Pass it on to your kids or grandkids.
When I was in college I had a good chunk of cash coming in. I had my Army Reserve pay, my RA pay, and in the summers I caddied at a country club. Want another gun-- get a job and save for it or hang out long enough at a gun shop and pick up a part time job there.0 -
Get some financial aid and take out a little extra on a fixed interest student loan, and save a little. Believe me you won't find a better deal on a loan anywhere than a student loan. Not even if you have perfect credit and enough money to pay back in the bank. The current subsidized student loan, your looking at a 4% fixed simple interest, with a 50 minimum per month pay with no penalties. I know business students who took out all their student loans and invested them, made a good turn around and paid them back in full. Just remember that yes you do have to pay them back, and be responsible. They are intended for living expenses and other things you might need as a student, but you can spend them on what you want, just don't get carried away with it. And don't be stupid an buy a gun on a credit card. Seriously just pull some money out, and put some asside. Find another means to save some cash, like not waisting it on beer, be a little patient, and you'll get that SBEII.
Don't sell your old family guns, they are crap to you know but you'll regret it later.0
