Romanian AK 47s
I have seen several of the Romanian AK 47s for reasonable prices for sale lately. Around $400. Anybody have any opinions of them?

chiefr....I bought a Romie AK74 several years ago and it is a blast to shoot. Never has caused me a problem and have run hundreds of rounds through it. Good shooting! 0 -

They are very reliable. If you get a newer one (07 year or newer) you don't have to worry about canted sights.0 -
buy it...great fun to shoot...anything under 4 bills now seems to be the going rate...seen them as low as 349.00 at dunhams sports in recent weeks 0 -
This is the lowest end of the commercially available AKs.
$400 is about the going rate.
The WASR-10 models are modified from a single-stack design, and the mag well has been reamed out to take a double stack magazine. So depending on how well this has been done, in SOME cases with SOME mags, this may result in a little bit of mag "wobble".
Also, some of them (as already mentioned) suffer from "canted" sights, meaning the front sight post is rotated out of alignment with the rest of the gun. A "proper" fix of a canted sight is a bit involved, though I've heard that "clamp it in a vise and whack it with a 2x4" actually works surprisingly well.
IMO, better to just find one with a straight sight. [;)]
All that said, these will work just fine. If you want "an" AK, buy one.
Its an AK. . .its a simple and robust design with a small number of moving parts. These are built in huts and caves by peasants with hand tools in Afghanistan, China, and elsewhere in the third world, and they run fine. Its pretty hard to screw one up.

One of my first Aks was a SAR-1 romanian built AK.. I fired probably 10,000 rounds through it with alittle sign of wear.. I bought the gun with a POSP 4x24 scope to put on the side mount, and a cheap russian made genration 1 side mounted night scope... my experiance with it was positive, accuracy with wolf FMJ and HP was usually around 3"-5"at 100 yards and the gun was genrally good enough to 300-400 yards..
The iron sights worked as the manual said they where supposed to and sighting it in was easy as I recall, It reqired drifting the front sight just a tad..
The WASR with indents on each side of the magwell would be my choice, I'd get the solid stock model and a dog leg picatinny mount to make it compatable with comercial american/jap made red dots, scopes and magnifiers.0 -
I have a Sar-1, 4 home built Romanian G rifles, and owned a Wasr 10.
All are good rifles and will do the job.
That said, K-var is selling Arsenal Russian Saigas that take standard ak magazines for $589.

The Arsenal rifles will hold their value better than the Wasr.0 -
They are great, but there are occasional duds. I got a dud, its all outta spec, the magazine locks up way to low and the bolt can't engage the case head unless you hold the back of the magazine up. Happens with all mags too, tapco or metal surplus ones. Just a dud. 0
