Shipping Ammo to Alaska
We are in NYS and have a friend in Alaska who needs a box of .416 Remington ammo. Since I hardly ever ship ammo can I ship this UPS and anybody have an idea of the costs ? Thanks..

It ships by weight and zip code. You can go to WWW.ups.com and use the shipping page. Be sure you put ORM-D in a box with SMALLARMS CARTRIDGES by it. You have to take to your local depot ot ship. 0 -
not true. AK & (HI obviously) ship UPS air even though you may specify ground . It will require special hazardous packaging so it's not worth it. It will be VERY expensive 0 -

You can get a good estimate if you know your friends address(zip code) and the weight of the package. With the ORM-D, it shouldn't be more than $50.00-60.00. I would send him two or three boxes. Yes...even though from some point in the lower 48 to Alaska will be on a plane, I am sure the rates are adjusted for it. Since you are a dealer(FFL), you can arrange for UPS to pick it up also. If you haven't already, if I were in your shoes, I would start an account with UPS.
The USPS does not handle ammo knowingly...so that route is out for Priority mail flat rate.

If he has powder and primers and dies for that caliber just break it down and send him the unprimed cases and bullets no has mat needed and it can then go regular mail. 0 -
it is not an issue of RATES it is an issue of SAFETY. ammo or primers or powder cannot go air due to the explosive possibility 0 -
When I was shipping ammo through FedEX awhile back, they told me that their were two different types of air shipments as far as ammo was concerned.
They couldn't ship it as freight on a commercial passenger airliner, because they considered it hazardous material.
The could ship it on one of their own or leased air cargo planes, because they didn't fly with passengers.
This might be what is causing this confusion, if UPS has the same regs as FedEX. And they have to be sure that it flys only on one of their Air Cargo planes?0 -

You know not what you talk about, so do not give inaccurate advice! I have shipped ammo, and had ammo shipped UPS next day! No problems. Ammo does not require the same hazzard material procedures as primers or powder. I have been doing it for 20 plus years!

Not to Alaska!! I've shipped thousands of boxes, check my feedback number. The rules to ship lower 48 are different and you don't want to be caught or worse causing a problem on a flying plane. Better yet call UPS and ask. Live ammo is not allowed air and AK always travels air even if ground is specified. It is a little odd because you can put live ammo in its original box as part of your checked baggage on a commercial flight. I only go by what UPS tells me. A fedex counter won't even take ammo according to company policy. 0 -

Alaska is a REALLY BIG state & where in Alaska is of extreme importance for an accurate answer to this quandry.
Any place on or near the water that is served by barge delivery can recieve ammo shipment as in surface delivery. Google "alaska marine lines" & "Boyer alaska barge". If this method will work, be aware they have a minimum so shipping in quantity will be the most bang for the buck.
Sportsman's Warehouse in Anchorage will take orders & ship to the bush via float plane/bush pilot service.
Please start a new thread & give your friend's location. This shipping problem has a solution short of buying UPS another plane.
