Collimator continued...

So are you saying that once the vertical lines of the collimator and the scope are adjusted so that they line up, the scope is square to the action of the rifle.?.? I'm having some difficulty grasping this...it almost seems to me as if you could twist both of them 5 degrees to the right and they'd still line up.?.?

ECC,
An optical collumnator works on the theory that the scope is mounted to the centerline of the gun's barrel/reciever. That takes into account the holes are drilled and tapped, perfectly on the center of the reciever, and the thru holes in the bases are on center of the base, as are the rings, and lastly, when the reticle is centered in the scope. It all in theory should line up, directly dead center over the centerline of the bore and reciever. The collumnator is then set so the vertical centerline converges where the crosshairs meet, and secured not to move. The scope is then rotated in the rings so the crosshairs, both vertical, and horizontal, parralel the the lines in the collumnator. Like I said...it is based on the theory of minimal or "0" tolerence stack ups. It all in theory works out, but I still like my protractor level.

Maybe I have been lucky but never had a problem in even the smallest amount after I started using mine I still hate the old weavers That have a hook and screws are only on one side they turn the scope as you tighten the rings then when when you start with it slightly turned that is the very time the scope does NOT turn. Think about this Eric. The collimator is clamped on the spud which is stuck in the barrel. Now imagine a clock face with the minute hand at 12:00. Now rotate that hand to 1:00. That is what the collimator does, because it rises above the line of the bore, while the scope can spin within the rings, it cannot rotate with the collimator and only lines up with it TDC. And yes, they can appear to be perfectly lined up and the reticle still be a touch canted.
