    OK, I've been reading the ATF website and looks like the 1911A1 I'm selling falls under the list as {All properly marked and identified semiautomatic pistols and revolvers used by, or mfd. for, any
    military organization prior to 1946.} Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    I wouldn't have a problem sending to a Curio & relic FFl. Will I be able to check the status of these C&R FFL just like a FFL on Gunbroker? Thanks in advance, John

    Someone will probably be along shortly to tell you how the BATFE can walk into your home any time they please and search under you bed without a warrant (that is one of the several standard online forum responses which are virtually automatic) but none of that is true. There is some basic paperwork involved, but the benefits are huge compared to the $30 cost of the license.

    My agent came by about 6 months after I got mine, no suprises, we scheduled it about 2 weeks in advance. THe only reason he came was I was ramdonly picked for inspection. He brought along paperwork I should have recieved with my license, but didnt, he talked me through the stuff, gave his contact info, and left. He said I would probably never be inspected again since it was only the 03FFL license.

    There's no down side that I can of. Just be sure to play by the rules and keep good records. Here is the FAQ page from the ATF website with some good suggestions:

    Hello Doug,

    I have had mine for nearly 15-years now... no inspections, and definitely no downside to having it. I always carry a few copies with me to all of the big gun shows that I attend, as it makes out of state purchases much easier.

    Well, YEAH, there is a downside- you stay BROKE! And the somewhat scarce older guns you rarely see at gunshows- like Mossberg 22s from the 40's- you now spend your free time prowling the on line auctions- and your addiction is now unchecked (Hi- Mine name is 11B, and I'm a Mossbergerholic...) Have had my 03 since 1976, never been inspected. Keep good records, DO NOT be buying and selling as if you are "engaging in the business"- use your license for what it was meant for. I travel a LOT on business- and keep a couple of copies in my wallet for targets of opportunity.

    And another vote in favor. I've had my C&R for about 15 years with no inspections. After saying that, they'll probably contact me within a week.[:D] The only problem I've run into is the occasional dealer who WILL NOT ship to a C&R. I've sometimes not bid on guns on the auction side because the seller wouldn't ship to me, and I WON'T pay an FFL to receive a C&R-eligible firearm. But I wouldn't hesitate if I were you.

    30 bucks is cheap for the bennie's you can get.....have had mine for just under 3 years and so far only have one entry in my log...money dried up for lots of toys[:(]....but saving the ffl transfer on that one gun alone paid for the license.......kinda impressive knowing you can get long skinny boxes shipped right to your door..lol[:D]

    I read that it is not legal to have a pistol with a stock connected to it. I have an old Broomhandle Mauser and a reproduction stock for it. Is that not okay, or is is completely considered a Curio and relic? I am in the crazy state of Calif. So, anything can happen.

    As long as the reproduction stock duplicates the original then the entire combination is exempted from any federal restrictions. State laws are over the place on shoudler stocked pistols.

    Hi, and thanks for the info. Being in Calif. is tough as I do not follow all the changes in laws, and they don't really get out there and let everyone know what is new.

    Mark - in CA I believe the problem with the Mauser Broomhandle in CA would be it's length, most likely under 30" OAL with stock attached, no exemption on that for C & Rs. As an aside, an Inglis or Luger with shoulder stock attached would (in addition to OAL) trigger our AW restrictions - centerfire semi auto with pistol grip and detach mag.

    Regarding the C & R license in general, I think the $30.00 cost for 3 years is paid for in one or two orders from Brownells or Midway or Grafs, etc - the give a pretty good discount to FFL holders.
