Another of my inherited collection I am seeking data / value information for. Many thanks in advance!
Winchester 29inch octagon barrel in caliber 38-55. Flip up sight. Set trigger. Etching on top three side of the barrel... I have never seen such. Quite beautiful.

The finish on the barrel is known as stippling. Besides being quite decorative the mat surface is deliberately non reflective, which was probably a optional special order feature specifically ordered by the gentleman who bought the rifle. 0 -
Absolutely gorgeous rifle. The matte finish on the top three barrel flats knocks out the glare the shooter would ordinarily have to contend with while aiming, hence rufe snow's comment. 0 -
Wow Bert will love to see this one He and KIMI as well as others are some of the best in the world when it comes to values on the Winchesters 1885. I hope the answer is No if you ever plan on selling these and Hope you get interested in shooting them You have some great guns 0 -

Wow, if that thing letters out you have hit the jackpot. You will need to give Bert a serial no. of course. First thing I noticed was the sights dont look correct, but that would be an easy fix. There is also no fore arm rest which was indicative of the Schuetzen. Maybe its a sporting rifle orderd with a swiss butt? I would like to see where the 38-55 stamp is to see if it was ordered with no rear seat. Right above the forearm on the underside there is a number, what is it? Case coloring looks great,as does wood. Good luck with this one!!!!!![:p] 0 -
Hello All,
That is what Winchester referred to as their "Special Single Shot Rifle", and the barrel is "matted" on the top three flats. The butt plate is what is referred to as a "large Swiss", and the butt stock has a Swiss cheek piece. There are just two special order features on that rifle... (1) the matted barrel, and (2) the Schuetzen double-set trigger.
Unfortunately, there are a few issues with the rifle...
(1) The spur lever has been defaced (the upper spur has been removed).
(2) Neither of the sights is original (it should have a Wincheser windgauge gloge front and a mid-range vernier tang sight).
Back when that rifle was new, it sold for $45.00 versus the $16.00 it cost for a Plain Sporting Rifle.

Cartod... just in front of the foregrip on the underside of the barrel is the number '4'. Above the foregrip on the side of the barrel toward the end is the caliber '38-55'.
Bert... other numbers on the rifle are '79' just behind the triggers, and '77582' between the stock screws. which I assume is the serial number.
The sights do not appear to be stock, as you all have indicated.
Good eye on the upper spur... I would not have noticed it, but when you look you can see where it once was. I am including close-ups of that.
It is also missing a piece on the bottom of the foregrip. A close-up of that will be posted shortly as well.0 -
Bert will be back along to tell you when it was made. It has a #4 barrel which I believe was an additional cost. The 38-55 stamp being on the side I think means that the gun had some kind of sight on the top of the barrel?? are you going to auction it?? Here is one sorta like yours (low wall)that is up for sale, yours is nicer.[;)]
