FFL Info please

Hi everyone. Im confused on all the FFL stuff. Could someone tell me how and when i would need to use one? Also can you give me some info on how to get an FFL??

    Yes, I'm sure that the way we throw around the term, it must be confusing.

    Think of it in terms of automobiles; if you want to buy a new car, you go to a local dealer. Same thing with guns; the gunshop in your home town is your local guy who can order from a distributor & get you what you want.

    You don't need to open a car dealership if you want to buy a new or used car, & you don't get an FFL unless you are going into the gun business.

    It gets a little trickier with guns if your local dealer doesn't have what you want, say, if the gun is on Gunbroker. In most cases, you can only buy a gun within your own state; if the seller is in another state, you will need to have it shipped to your local dealer so that he can be sure the transfer is legal in your state.

    Some cities & counties have more restrictive laws, so that sometimes makes it more difficult.

    There is also form of license called a Curio and Relic or C&R that allows one to buy firearms older than 50 years or listed as C&r elegible. It allows you to buy directly without shipping through an FFL, and without a 4473, but ONLY on C&R eligible arms, and only jif more restrictive state or local regulations do not intervene.

    It does NOT allow you to engage in buying and selling firearms except occasionally to improve your collection.

    Firearms can't be simply shipped to you directly in the mail, They must be shipped to a Federal Firearm Licensed (FFL) dealer. Where you will be required to fill out the 4473 form and pass the NICS background check.

    SammyBusby, Scroll down through the threads on this forum until you get to a closed one entitled "phone ffl". Then scroll down through the posts until you get to one by "givette". He has very succinctly listed what can be by an ffl, non-ffl, etc. It should answer your question. As Neal Myers said, don't think about getting an ffl dealer license unless you are going into the gun business. To get an ffl your business location must be zoned commercial (your residence is OK if it is zoned commercial), you must get retail permits as required in your area, must comply with any local restrictions. If you meet all these requirements then you can go to the BATFE web site and get the info as to how to apply for the dealer's license. You will have to pay $300 for the first three years. Thereafter it is $90 for a 3 year renewal.

    $300????? It was $200 last year. When did they go up?

    If your asking me, no im not a dealer. I would however like to get my own buisness going someday. Right now I have no firearms at all. Everythin I had got burned up in a house fire about 5 years ago. If I could get one opened around my hometown I bet I could do pretty good with all the hunters around. The closest one is about 25 miles away and they are very high on their prices.

    If your asking me, no im not a dealer. I would however like to get my own buisness going someday. Right now I have no firearms at all. Everythin I had got burned up in a house fire about 5 years ago. If I could get one opened around my hometown I bet I could do pretty good with all the hunters around. The closest one is about 25 miles away and they are very high on their prices.

    Also I would only be buying rifles. Do those have to be shipped to an FFL in my state as well? I know that the handguns do.

    The legalities (interstate):
    Non FFL shipping to FFL:
    FFL is not required to send his licence to you. Verify his 'status' via the FFL E-Z check (he will send you his license number).
    FFL shipping to FFL:
    Sender is required to receive a copy of receiver's FFL prior to shipment. Copies transmitted electronically are accepted (per ATF).
    FFL receiving from non FFL:
    Perfectly legal (some states have a restriction on this for handguns, etc..such as NY and a few others where it must ship FFL-FFL). Good business practice to demand photocopy of senders ID for the record. Many FFL's will not comply with this. Their call.
    Non FFL receiving from FFL:
    Not allowed. Won't happen unless receiver engages in fraud, or sending FFL ships in error.
    Non FFL receiving from non FFL:
    See paragraph above.
    Non FFL shipping to licensed repair/manufacturing facility:
    Allowed (per ATF). Services of outbound and inbound FFL not necessary. Shipment may originate at your address, and must be returned to the address the package originated from (home address, etc).

    $300????? It was $200 last year. When did they go up?

    I believe there is a $200 application fee and the $90 fee for the actual license making the grand total just short of $300.
