HAMMER BITE

DIZZY
I have a browning hi power with a spur hammer and it is a fine pistol except it has a habit of biting quit often my question is there a simple fix for this problem. thanks in advance for your help.

    go to Brownells and search for their different styles of hammers . You must have hands with a lot of flesh on them most people have problems with early style 1911 pistols and of course that was changed with the 1911A1 never saw anyone have problem with Hi Power.

    Simplest fix is change your grip, though that may not be a good fix.

    Next fix is to have a custom shop (eg Cylinder and Slide) weld on a custom beavertail. This is neither simple, nor inexpensive, but its a good permanent solution.

    Bobbed hammer may help (all by itself or with added beavertail).


    Edit: Shooting glove could also work, but IMO its a PITA to have to put one on for just a 9mm! Ditto for a bandaid. I don't really think either one of these is a solution to the problem, but more of a way to reduce the symptoms.

    When I say a bobbed hammer "may" help it depends on how "bobbed" it gets and how it interacts with your hand.

    An entirely different hammer may fix the problem, but again that depends on which hammer you put in there and your particular anatomy. Not "any" ring hammer will work; the large factory "ring" hammers can actually hammerbite too.

    There is also another "fix" and that is to put a bandaid in the web of your hand and it will take the brunt of the pinch. I have a Llama 1911 with a spur style hammer that bites a little and have used this trick.

    grip down a tad lower.

    Spur triggers on the Browning Hi Power do that.
    Change the hammer to the ring style and the problem will go away.

    Cylinder&Slide-Novaks or Garthwaite all can fix the problem.
    Garthwaite will sell you the hammer, if you want to put it in yourself.

    Hi Powers are collectable. How old a gun is it? I could see changing out a hammer on a newer one but not on a WWII one.

    drobs brings up an interesting point. If you swap hammers save the original. If you opt for a modification to the hammer, consider getting a new one to be worked on so you can keep all original parts original.

    THANKS GUYS ONCE AGAIN YOU HAVE COME TO MY RESCUE I THINK ILL SEND IT IN AND HAVE THE HAMMER CHANGED ITS AN EARLY 70'S MODEL GUN WITH ITS SHARE OF WEAR AND MODS OVER THE YEARS AGAIN THANKS FOR THE FINE SUGGESTIONS
