Would this be worth the effort/cost?
Some years ago my grandfather gave me a rifle. It never shot well so we put it away and just held on to it. I found it in my dad's basement today and wondered if it'd be worth bringing back to life.
I forget the make/model but that's not important. It's a commercial Mauser action but the barrel has very little rifling left. I assume that to be the cause of the inaccuracy. What would it cost to have that action re-barreled? Is it much work or a fairly easy job, or is it just better to hang on to it for what it is?

While you're getting together the pics and detailed description you might also want to run a patch with some good bore cleaner on it down the barrel, wait half an hour, and see what comes out. I've seen a lot of pitted bores, burned out throats and buggered crowns , worn out rifling, almost never. I'd make sure the barrel didn't just need a good cleaning, or possible recrown, before I rebarreled. That said, if you do decide to rebarrel you can have the fun of deciding on the new chambering.0 -
Hello you state it is a commercial Mauser action. This alone could be worth a bit of money in it's self some of them had set triggers double square bridge ETC Pictures would be a big help . 0 -
E.R. Shaw will sell you a barrel for $155, install it for $75, and blue the barrel and action for $95. $325 plus shipping and not available for much less elsewhere.
Changing a barrel is not a DIY with bench vise and Stilson wrench.
As said, a really good cleaning might make all the difference in the world unless the barrel has been badly neglected.0 -
I hate to take up thread space that might be needed for more tech info. But I do feel this is a worthwhile comment.
There is a hidden factor in determining the value of such a project. That being the learning experience, and sense of pride and accomplishmnt in producing a rifle that uniquely yours.
And you may have the opportunity for a great project that if properly done might become a family heirloom w/value not measured in dollars. A custom rifle that YOU BUILT.0
