hk 91 sights/ early SACO import
I currently have on auction on Gunbroker an early HK 91 SACO import that has a rear sight unlike what most of these rifles have. It has two round knobs on the outside for elevation and a screw in the center. It appears original in that the mount looks factory, but I would like to have any information available. thanks, merrillgtrs

Either post the photo you used on the auction or give us the link to the auction so that we can look at the sight. The earliest G3 rifles (and the CETME) used the flip type rear sight with protecting ears but HK replaced that design with the rotary drum type sight as early as 1961. SACO was the earliest importer of what had become known as the HK-91 (previous imports in the 1960s by by Golden State Arms were known as the G-41), followed by Security Arms and then by Heckler and Koch itself. All semi autos from the G-41 in the 1960s forward to the HK-91 used the drum rear sight or the pricey 1200 meter rear sight as an option.

They had a heavy barrel machine gun with a bipod, that had a "drum" sight. I don't know if the rear sights could be swapped between different models though? Better make sure the receiver on your rifle is the original semi-auto version. Don't know if their machine gun receivers could have been used to build up a semi-auto only rifle, with or without the selective fire trigger mechanism. 0 -
That is the optional 1200 meter rear sight. I have the same rear sight on many of my own HK rifles:

I don't know what the sights cost now, but they added $117 MSR to the cost of the rifles back in the day. Not really common, but not rare either. The HK stock number was 2211370 -
Right now most of the 1200 meter sights being sold now are 3rd and 4th generation. They run from around 250 to 350+. Don't see many offerings for the first generation. Last price I saw was around $50 if I remember correctly. 0
