I'd hate to see an early rifle d&t for a modern scope, try to find a Unertl, or Lyman target scope (yes I know, +$$$ but worth it)

Welcome to the forum. Some people buy guns to shoot them, others buy them to sell them. I well used rifle can never become a collector's piece unless it is extremely rare. I had a Remington target 22 and I had it drilled and tapped. A lot of members of my family have learned to shot an had target practice with that rifle and nobody ever complained about a good solid non original scope mount. I don't know where that gun is now, but I am sure some family member will someday reluctantly hand it back to me.

Setting it up with weaver mounts will most likely drop the value to half of what it's worth. But that's exactly what I did to mine and I've never regretted it. Mounted a burris 4.5 x 14 scope on it and turn in really nice groups at 100 yards. I don't even shoot it at 50 anymore because it turns in pea size groups so easily that it's kind of boring.

Lyman 438 Field scopes can be had for around $300. Will fit the mounts and are period correct. I would not drill it. They aren't making any more and realy nice ones are geting scarcer every year. Bottom line is, it is your gun, your choice.
