Anyone shoot 454 Casull from a S&W 460?

I was wondering if shooting alot of 454 ammo thru the 460 would have any detrimental effects on the gun. Also, is there any loss of accuracy when shooting 454's out of the 460?

    Works fine in mine. I find the factory Hornady 200gr.460 ammo to be the most accurate though. I shot some 454 300gr. handloads through it that shot fairly well. 3" groups @ 100yrds off of a sand bag.

    Why would it hurt the gun?

    These guns are built like tanks and designed to take the "weaker target rounds"* you refer to. [;)]

    At worst, you might get a little carbon buildup at the front of the chamber from firing those short and "puny" .454s, but that's nothing you couldn't fix with a little elbow grease.

    As to accuracy, you never get MORE accuracy when shooting shorter rounds from longer chambers because of increased cylinder/forcing cone jump, but I think you should be able to get reasonably good accuracy with quality .454 loads.

    *(Which IIRC, is how one of the Smith engineers working on the gun described the .454 rounds).

    Same reason as 38spec in 357 and 44spec in 44 mag. Leaves a fouling ring at the end of the shorter case. With something as hot as the 454, you might eventually get some erosion at that point resulting in 460 cases sticking in the chamber.
