    Why would you think its factory when the guy tell you it isnt? No way that is factory and I am not an expert. Its to fancy, too deep and too much. plus they would never put that wood on an engraved gun. Where is Pauline??

    I am betting with Cartod Scott. It might even be a factory pattern but it is just not as consistent as factory work. I also agree the wood is sub-standard for a factory engraved gun.

    Thanks for the heads up Cartod. Have not been following any forums much. I've had the flu. Anyway, this M12 pattern may look familiar because it is a M42 No. 5 pattern. While it is not done by anyone in the factory, it is a pretty good copy. Also you are right about the wood. Winchester never would have put that plain wood on an engraved gun. You know what? Kudos to the seller for advertising the gun honestly. How often do you see that with an engraved Winchester. I guess there is hope after all!

    I basically know nothing about the factory engraved guns, I just recognize the pattern...
    I made a mistake by not reading the whole add, he clearly explains how he knows the engraving isn't from the factory. Good tip on the wood, I hadn't thought of it and yeah, I imagine once the gun was engraved it would have been reblued at that time.
    Still, I like it...alot. and I have seen many model 12's sell for this price without the engraving.(which still costs plenty) I wonder how hard it would be to have it restocked with XXX wood?
    I would have to see the gun in person, luckily I live within easy traveling distance to look it over.

    It has to be a re-blue. The only way it could not have been a re-blue, is to have purchased a winchester firearm that was 'in the white' when it left the factory, engrave it, then give the firearm its first-time bluing. Winchesters always had a finish on their firearms prior to shipment*. Best, Joe

    A decent job, but IMHO it wouldn't add half of what it cost to have done to the value of the piece.
