I was just finished working on a S&W revover. On mine, you would need to swing the cylinder out and the model number is on the frame along with the serial number.

    Hope this helped.

If it was made before 1957 it doesn't HAVE a model number, they used to have real names.
Any numbers different from the serial number on the butt are company assembly numbers with no meaning after the gun has left the factory.

Is it a hand ejector (swing out cylinder)?
Are you SURE it is .38 SPECIAL, so marked on the barrel?
Does it have an exposed hammer?
If so, it is probably a Chief's Special, which was given the model number 36 in 1957. Unless it is an Airweight with aluminum frame, in which case it is the gun that later became the model 37.

Pictures would sure cut down the game of 20 questions.

Thanks for the replies. It does have a swing out cylinder, exposed hammer, and the barrel is marked .38 Special. The number 10 943 is the number you see after swinging out the cylinder.

If it is a "J" frame model,36-37, it was made in 1956.
We really need a picture to pin it down [;)]
