winchester factory letter
how do you get one what information is on them and how much do they cost

Have received the Winchester letter I have been waiting for 6 weeks.
I had 4 points of interest on this Winchester 1886 DOM 1891.
1. rifle has a single set trigger. Confirmed in letter.
2. has a Lyman tang sight and a Beach combination front sight. Not mentioned in letter.
3. possible heavy barrel with .810" at muzzle. No it's standard.
4. has hole in the butt stock and forearm cap for a sling. Not mentioned in letter.
Not earth shattering news, but nice to have the letter.
Good news is this rifle has a really nice bore and bright and shiny with just a few odd marks maybe from cleaning. 9+
Have fired a couple hundred rounds thru it with black powder and light smokeless loads.
Shoots and functions without issue. Have plenty of pictures. Barrel has turned brown and no case color left except under the tang sight and a few protected areas. The butt stock has a small shrinkage crack at the butt plate but seems solid and forearm looks good with no chips or cracks. Stocks look like maybe been varnish at some time.
Pretty much a standard rifle with crescent butt plate and 26" octagon barrel, 40-82 caliber.

You call the Cody museum (307)587-4771. It depends on what they originally wrote down as to what is on the letter, usually it wil be like this one. The cost is $100 for non members.

A factory letter costs just $35 for a CFM member, and you can get a multi-letter value pack that gives you an even better deal...

If the gun letters properly, the CFM factory letter adds a minimum of $100 to the value of the gun in question. For a high-end Winchester, it can add several hundred $$ to the value.0 -

They are worth allot! I had one I knew was a little unusual, but needed the money and sold it. If I had gotten it lettered and realized what I did have, I could have sold it for more than $1000 more than I did! After a little research, and a letter the new owner got, I learned it was a special order deluxe rifle with some options delivered to the Chisolm Ranch in NM.[:(]

You are kidding, right? You are getting a factory letter not a carfax. [:o)[:D]].....A letter on some guns can add thousands to there value. for instance, I bought a Win 21 years ago that was stamped deluxe on the floor plate but the letter never said the word deluxe in it and therefor the gun could not be lettered as a deluxe model. Recently Cody started providing build sheets for some of the 21's. Well, there it was on the build sheet Winchester Deluxe. That one word on the New letter conservativly added a couple thousand to the value of the gun. The letter is also invaluable with engraved guns and others where authenticity is in question.0 -
Adding value has not been my experience with letters. At one point I owned 6 Winchester 1873's. All were lettered. When I sold 4 of them over the years the letter added nothing to the value. These guns were plain jane normal factory guns...nothing special other than a different front sight or a set trigger. They DID increase my pride of ownership in these guns, but unless it is high collector grade or was shipped to some known famous person then dont plan on getting the purchase price back from the letter. Also, most letters dont say who or where they were shipped to. 0 -

Obviously you have never seen a Cody Factory letter in person... it is not just a "crappy print out". The letter comes on buff colored heavy stock paper, with an official CFM seal, and each letter is hand signed by Jessica Bennett. The letter adds more than its $60 cost to the value of the gun... if the gun in question matches the letter.
If you want to complain about factory letter prices, try dealing with Colt[xx(].0
