I have a Colt Police Positive Special from 1922. The grips shown in your picture are not like the ones that came with my gun. Yours are aftermarket, I think.

Replacement grips for this model are not at all uncommon, since the original Colt grips were prone to chipping.

The Special marking told buyers that this .38 was not the old .38 short (.38 S&W) but rather the newer .38 Special.

The Police Positive was not chambered for a 38 Special. It has a shorter cylinder than the Police Positive Special which was chambered for 38 Special and other calibers. The Police Positive was chambered for 32 Colt, 32 New Police, 38 New Police and 38 S&W.
