Re-Crowning Question
I seen at Brownells they have tools for doing a re-crown job manually using their handles, cutters and pilots. Will this give an accurate job of re-crowning? Would a lathe cut re-crown be any more accurate or consistent? I was told by a competent gunsmith(he did a recrown job on my R-77 Hawkeye), that factory rifles don't generally have quite as good of a crown as they could have, and that most run of the mill factory rifles would see at least a little bit of accuracy enhancment by having the crown redone. Would this be a fair asessment? Thanks

yes they have the hand cutter and they work fine as long as you are careful. can you be more exact by machine, yes. The big question is what is the accuracy of the rifle at present. it may be just a waste of time to spend the time, money and energy. there is a lot of other things that contribute to accuracy ie. barrel, stock, bedding, ammo and the shooter. 0 -
Well, Ive a 673 Remington in 6.5 Rem Mag. About the best accuracy I can get is 1 1/8"-1 1/4" with reloads. The barrel has been floated, the stock pillar-bedded and the action glass bedded. The trigger has also been tuned to about 2 3/4 lbs., give or take an ounce or two. Inevitably, when I shoot 3 shot groups, there are 2 that are less than .75" apart and one flier that's usually about .5" from the other 2. I was told that this could be an indication that the crown isn't completely right with the world. I'm just wondering if a re-crown would give me that last little nudge to get a 1 moa shooter, or if I've got about all this rifle has to offer. The one down side is that I can only get 2.815" COAL on my reloads. 0 -
Sounds like you have done most everything else , so why not recrown . I would recomend a smith do it . If you buy the manual tools you may use them just once . My smith charges me $40.00 for a cut and crown , and it's usually the first thing I do when I'm looking for better accuracy. Then the trigger and then bedding . Aren't pillars and glass redundant ? 0 -
It will never be as good as if it's done with a lathe set up properly...
Pretty hard to dial in the bore to less than .0001 runout with a hand tool...
Consider the cost of the tooling to do it by hand against the $40.00 average
that most smiths will charge to do it...0 -
We use the Brownells tools and they do a very good job if you go slow. The crown is as just as good as a lathe re-crown. 0 -
Is another possibility that the barrel is warming up and this is causing the barrel to change th POI?
I have a 300WM that first three shots are inside a dime and the fourth is always an inch or so off from the rest.0 -
After shooting, at least with a 22, a good crown will show a snowflake pattern, nice and even. Does your rifle show similar? An uneven pattern indicates an uneven crown...

rsnyder55 I suppose that's a possibility, but as long as there is no pressure points touching the barrel, could that happen right from the git go. oneoldsap I don't think it is redundant. The pillars and the glass serve different purposes. In my mind, the pillars assure the action bolts are tightened cosistently, as well as eliminate the possibility of poi change through warpage in the receiver, and the glass forms a more solid foundation around the lug area and receiver area to ensure vibrations at time of ignition are consistent as well as controlled to some degree. That may not be a completely accurate description of the purposes. I'm sure that nononsense or justc could correct any inaccuracies I may have made, but I think generally speaking, I'm on the right track. Thanks for the intersting perspectives guys. My barrel is freefloated. If the barrel does not heat and expand evenly, then it can change to point of impact.
I also wonder that as the barrel heats, could it change the the harmonics of the barrel?0 -
Before I would do anything I would have the Smith take the barrel off. I have two Remington 700 and both barrels the chambers where completely out of round and the lands & groves where not even all the way the chamber. 0
