Erase Engraving??
Recently purchased a custom shop Weatherby MK-V with a gold diamond plate inletted in the stock. The plate has the initials of the previous owner engraved in it. Is it possible to 'erase' the existing engraving so as to have a new smooth finish for whatever purpose I or a new owner might choose?

You will have to lower the surface of the plate below the existing engraving, or replace the inlay. 0 -
A GOOD artist with a hand held engraver could probably do something like a scroll pattern, or something similar and camo it to the point it would never be noticed by anyone other than you.......... Food for thought.... 0 -
Depending on how deep the engraving is,a hand engraver or bench jeweler might be able to burnish the lettering out. 0 -
If I understand, you have a metal plate in a pocket milled in the stock. If so, what about replacing the plate? I can help w/ making the new plate, cnc engraving, & any finish. 0 -

Thanks to everybody for the ideas. Replacing the plate was my first thought also but the stock is so nice I didn't want to attempt it on my own and contacting Weatherby was just too obvious, I guess. I'll contact them and see what they say. If that is a dead end I'll be back. Jeff, thanks for the offer and we may talk more. 0 -
With no pics, I am just guessing. If the plate is attached w/ wood screws - that would make this simple. I suspect it's attached w/ adhesive. You can't pry it out w/o damaging the wood. You can drill & tap through the plate. Naturally you need enough wood below the plate to do this. Then insert a screw & pull. This may or may not work depending on the adhesive & the size of the plate. If not, then just destroy the plate w/ a dremmel w/ cut-off disk & then you can pry it off w/o damaging your wood. 0
