semi wadcutter
on a recent trip to my local gun shop to by 45acp brass I asked the salesman about shooting semi wadcutters in my smith&wesson 1911 in 45acp,he told me that it would probably require a different barrel,is there somthing to that or just bad advice. thanks in advance.

Bad advice [:(!][V]. The short nose 185 grain Semi Wadcutter design MAY not feed well in your barrel because the feed ramp MAY need to be polished and slightly contoured The magazines MAY need Tweaking . Notice I state MAY all of my match pistols will feed properly size EMPTY cases. Many pistols will have function problems with 185 grain because the recoil impulse is less and the slide will not fully cycle . Load one round in magazine and fire if slide does not lock back then get a slightly weaker recoil spring EASY CHEAP FIXfrom brownells NEVER use recoil buffers[V]. Find a good PISTOL SMITH near you or use one of the master shops like Cylinder & Slide , Wilson , or Clark. if you have problems. "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN" 0 -

I don't use a buffer in my 1911, but recall trying them once, years ago. Why the "no go" ?
Do they create problems, or just an expense with no benefit??

R Crosby I guess I should explain about the Buffers . Let me preface this with what followers is just my opinion . As we get older we become more opinionated[:I].A buffer will not last forever and will break-up and tie up a pistol at the worst possible time . However this is not the major problems caused by the buffer. #1 the buffer can and does cause feed problems BECAUSE it limits both the distance and timing of the slide travel. Why is this bad[?] The way it should work is the round is fired the slide starts to recoil the round ejects the the breach face of the slide clears the rear of the magazine on the way back and at that time the next round starts to rise until the sides of the round contacts the lips of the magazine then the slide bottoms out the rearward travel and starts to move forward and strip the round out of the magazine.[:)] If the slide has not been allowed to move all the way back "HITS BUFFER" [:(]then it Will/Can bounce forward NOT giving the next round in the magazine enough time to fully rise.this will cause the round to be too low at the rear and cause mis-feeds some shooters put in NEW/Stronger magazines springs to try to over come the symptom not the cause[:(]. #2 because of this same timing problem the slide stop does not have enough time after the last shot is fired to fully rise and lock the slide back . I have seen a number of 1911 type pistols with Rounded hold open notches in the slide some so bad it ruined the slide[:(]. Each of those have either had a Buffer used or some after-market Heavy duty Extra strength latest greatest Super recoil spring[V]. IMHO if one matches the load to the recoil spring you don't batter the gun [^] you don't over stress the recoil spring[^]you don't need to change out the magazine spring and recoil spring[^] My wadcutter pistol has over 250,000 rounds through it since I installed it's current proper recoil spring and Magazines are the same ones I purchased 25 years ago and NEVER had to change springs. Thats all I shoot out of my S&W 1911, 200 grain Semi Was Cutters and I have never had a problem, No modifications to the pistol at all.0 -
westbryan, welcome to the forum. Bottom line you will not need to replace the barrel...the salesman is trying to be just that; a salesman that sales you something you don't need. 0
