ruger 10-22 rifle

have a ruger 10-22 rifle (not carbine) stainless. after the first five shots the group starts stringing vertically. checked barrel bedding and it is tight to the wood about half way down. is this easily "repaired" by finding the tight spots and removing enough wood to free float the barrel? is this a step in the right direction to fixing this problem?

    You are heading in that direction of corrective actions. Take the stock COMPLETELY off the gun, and set it aside. Make sure the action and barrel are securely joined together by tightening the two screws on the wedge block. this rifle should not string after 5 shots. It should take a lot more than that to heat it up. You might also consider the host of aftermarket stuff available for it.

    Be careful when you tighten those two screws. It is easy to overdo it & break the block. That in fact is one thing to check. If the block is broken that would cause the problem.

    Agree be careful tightening the two screws that hold the V block on...overtightening is NOT good...ask me how I know.

    I'd go to rimfirecentral.com and read the forums on bedding (both action and making a pillar) and see where that gets ya.
