TRADED FOR a mauser rifle rebarreled to .308 caliber short barrel synthetic stock nice job my question is was it commercial or a military in its former life markings are as follows a star emblem followed by SerieC.CH NO5351 MAUSER- WERKE A.B. OBENDORF A/N. also has mauserlogo on top rear of reciever I would like to mount a long eye relief scope on it for a scout rifle any comments or suggestions would be appreciated thanks Rick

    I just registered on this forun to see if I could get some advise on a Mauser rifle that I have. First of all it is an 8MM, with a 98 large ring receiver. On the side of the receiver it has GEW 98, a crest on the top of the front ring with the word DANZIG under the crest, and 1918 under that. The barrell is approximately 22" long with several german stamps on the barrell as well as the number s/42G on the right side of the rifle. The stock has a top piece that goes in front of the rear sight to the first barrell ring. The bottom of the stock goes to the end of the barrell covered with a metal cover that fastens to the stock.

    Any information I can get would be appreciate. By the way, this rifle still shoots and is pretty accurate out to about 200 yards. I have shot it several times with old military as well as factory and reloaded amunition.

    keep it as is. imho... you have a collector piece.

    The 22" barrel doesn't seem correct for a 98 Mauser made in the Danzig arsenal. Unless you got the barrel length wrong? And it's a variation of the 98 Mauser known as the 98 AZ, or to some U.S. collectors, engineer carbine.

    We would have to have quality photos to help you with correct identification.

    gew indicates the arsenal in which it was manufactured.


    This was the Berghaus Ww., August, Press- u. Stanzwerk, Oberbruegge/Westf arsenal.

    This could be around a $600-$900 rifle if it is 100% correct. If the #'s vary you may be in the $300-$600 range.

    It was W W I Mauser infantry rifle, whose barrel, stock and bayonet lug has been cut off. There is also a home made muzzle cap incorporating a front sight. In the condition it's in, it has no value to a military rifle collector. Maybe $100-$200 as a beater truck gun.

    I HATE TO BURN THE LAST ENTRY ON THIS BUT...I HAVE A VERY SIMILAR RIFLE (SPANDAU 1918)M98.jpg
    I WOULD SURE LIKE TO KNOW WHO MADE THESE UP AS I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHERS OVER THE YEARS (A POST WAR REBUILD FOR A POLICE AGENCY, OR ??). MINE ALSO SHOOTS VERY WELL.

    butchered...like losing your leg and saying how valuable you are as a dancer...from that point might as well sport it out to the max..as a Mauser collector i wouldn't consider it for more than a parts gun now..historical value is gone
