fireforming problems, how to fix?

I am fireforming 17 Ackley Hornet cases and about 1 in 4 splits about the case shoulder area. Anyone have fire forming advise to help me out? I am currently loading 12 grs of 1680 behind a 20 gr bullet and firing it to fire form.

    Try annealing the case necks before fire forming. The annealing will enable the brass to relax and form to the new chamber shape when fired. Keep the heat out of the base. Just hold the case in a propane flame, rotating the neck and base of the neck to the shoulder in the flame until hot to your finger then drop the hot case in a container of water. Lube and size the brass and shoot.

    Yes, 284 Fan is right. I anneal every piece of brass including 17 AH before the first loading. No neck splits in 5 years with 7 different calibers. See my post on annealing from last week.

    I use a Brassomatic for my annealing.
    I added a third torch coming in from the center.

    Great machine if you are doing volume.

    cpermd I will look up brassomatic. Also a good friend said use mappgas as it burns hotter and heats quicker than propane...

    Also, you can stand the cases neck up in a pan of water filled to half way up the case. Heat the neck til red and tip over with the torch tip and go on to the next one. Goes quick.
