i am thinking about doing this
a few years ago i built a rifle.. based on a mauser action. i took a 22-250 barrel with 1-8 twist and cut the chamber to accept a 6mm case necked down to .224 dia. all is good. now over my chronograph, i was pushing and am still pushing a 60 gr. nosler part at 3950fps.
by the way... sierra bullets will not hold up to the task. 63 and 69 bullets were coming apart in flight. i have taken 6 whitetails with this rifle from 60 yds. to 240 yds. all dropped dead in there tracks. no bullet was ever recovered. and were shot at different angles to let me see what this sweetheart could do. upon skinning them, the insides were devestated. it looked the same as if i had taken them with my 7mm stw.
now to my question... how do you suppose a rifle in 22-250 with the standard rate of twist would shoot if i opened up the chamber to the 6mm necked down to .224 and shoot ,say a barnes 50 gr. bullet. don't know why i want to do this but it sure is fun playing around.

My memory fails me regularly anymore, but isn't the .224-6mm called the "Texas Trophy Hunter"? My smith has chambered several of these with apparent great accuracy. HAWKSHAW0 -

You say "bullets were coming apart in flight". Lets consider a bullet launched at 4,000 FPS from a barrel with a 1 in 12 twist.
For every foot of travel the bullet makes one revolution, that is 4,000 revolutions per second or (4,000x60) 240,000 RPM (revolutions per minute).
Add the rotational motion to the forward travel thru the air & you wind up with a lot of friction & heat build-up in the tip of the bullet.
All the match bullets sold today have either hollow point or full metal jacket design. No lead soft point bullets (lead melts at a lower temp. than copper) & I don't think this came about by accident.

Right here let me slow down to say "It's all been done before". I think your money would be better spent on a few books for research rather than trial & error schemes that have been tried & failed in the past.
As mentioned in a post above, the 22 CHeetah is basically what you propose. In "Pocket Manual for Shooters & Reloaders" P. O. Ackley writes about the "22 Eargensplitten Loudenboomer" which was a 378 Weatherby case necked down to .224. Neither are avalible today, they have been discarded along with a long list of other large capacity cases necked down to 22.
But back to your question, "how would it shoot?"
1) Loud
2) Expensive
3) A barrel burner
4) Inaccurate after a few sessions ( much more apt to break down than break in)
The laws of physics were written long before any of us were born.
We are limited to about 60,000 PSI chamber pressure because that is slightly below where brass will flow/extrude. The energy exerted on a bullet as it travels down a barrel is limited to pressure & distance. There is a limit to pressure, so increasing case size & powder charge does not increase the work done. Once you reach the maximum pressure for a normal length barrel, THAT'S IT! if you want more, totally re-design of the system, as in new alloys for case, action, & barrel, or go to a longer barrel.
So, in summing up the answer to your questions;
Can I? yes
Is it practical? No
Will it be fun? only if you think wasting money is "fun".

If you want something fun to do find a 6mm barrel and neck up a .22-250 case to 6mm. Improve it if you really want some fun (6mm Int'l?). Load it with 55,58, 60 and 68 gr. bullets for some real speed.
Yes, what you are suggesting has been done and works. It also eats barrels. But, you get speed like no yesterday.
The important thing is you are spending your money the way you want to, and having fun doing it.0 -

No need to speculate; this particular wheel has already been re-invented several times, eg: .22-6mm Ackley improved, Texas Trophy Hunter, etc.
With a 6mm case necked down to .224, using a 50 grain bullet you'll yield about 4300fps:

You'll end up with a super flat-shooting, super hard-hitting .22 that will literally vaporize small game. Using heavy bullets, the shock effect is supposedly devastating on larger game too, out of proportion to the small caliber size.
As mentioned, you'll also wear out your barrel REALLY fast, with a probable barrel life of under 1000 rounds.0 -
