ar 15 recommendation
I am looking to purchase an ar15 that I can customize but am new to automatic rifles and am looking for any help I can get with choosing the right gun. Gun will be used for varmint hunting. Caliber? Maker? Where to Purchase?

All AR-15s can be customized. The biggest advantage of the AR-15 platform is that its highly modular, and that's one of the main reasons the guns are so popular.
What you want is something with a free-float barrel, ideally a bull barrel for accuracy (usually these are stainless or chrome-moly), and a flat-top, so you can hang a scope on it easily.
Ordinary .223 caliber should be fine for varmints, and I'd probably stick to that.
As to maker, multiple manufacturers offer "varmint" model AR-15s that have these characteristics.
Bushmaster's version is pretty popular and should work well, though there are many others that could work too (Rock River, DPMS, etc, etc, etc). I really wouldn't get too hung up about the name on the gun. The reason is that the AR-15 market is so competitive that pretty much all of the big manufacturers put out good guns and back them.
As to where to buy, first decide what your budget is and which gun you want to get. Then you can shop around at local dealers, on the internet, etc.0 -

Here is an example of a fine varmint type rifle in a left handed version. It has a Colt Match lower with a Lothar Walther 24 inch. SS bull barrel on a DPMS left handed upper, Badger stabilizer hand guard and 8x32 scope. Not pictured is the bipod. This is more of a mid level price range build. Total cost to build less scope was approx. $1200 and that was pre Obama pricing.
