Winchester Mod 12- loading shells

When loading shells in the magazine tube of a Model 12 should the ones previously loaded in it want to come springing back out, or should they be held back from doing so by a catch? I just had the gun worked on and they do just that and I don't recall if that happened prior to the work.

    The shells should stay in the tube as long as the slide (pump) is in the closed position. If they are not, its not a complicated fix but you will need to take it back to him unless you want to try it yourself. I dont know if I would want someone working on my gun if he did not catch this mistake when he fixed it the first time.

    Incidently I think your carrier is bent and needs taken back out and tweeked slightly. Not a hard job if you are handy.

    The shells should stick out from the magazine tube about 3/8 of an inch. Does the gun cycle correctly?

    When shells are pushed into the magazine they will back out as long as the lifter is depressed. When the last shell is loaded it is necessary to push it far enough into the tube to allow the lifter to resume it's normal position. This will allow the shell in the magazine to slip under the end of the lifter by about 3/8". To unload, the lifter is pushed down which forces the shell back into the magazine until the lifter is below the shell head at which time all the shells in the magazine tube will be expeled unless restrained.

    Is there a good book out there on the Model 12 that shows its parts and explains their function and disassembly and assembly? I've had a couple of Mod 12's for 35+ years and have used and cleaned them but can't say that I know their internal workings and operation. It would help answer some of my questions.
