winchester model 71 question
what is the difference between short tang and long tang on this gun, i have a model 71 348. i received when my great grandfather passed away and dont really know much about the gun except the sn is in the 10,000 and i believe it was made in 1936

Your Model 71 is a "long tang" versus the later production "short tang".
The pictures below should help you to see the difference...

The rifle on the left is the "short tang" and it shows that the upper tang screw extends all the way through to the lower tang.

I forgot to add... I can provide you with the exact day that it was manufactured if you provide the actual serial number. I have a copy of the Polishing Room Serialization Records information for the first 23,010 Model 71s made. That said, if it is in the 10,000 serial range, it was manufactured in January or February of 1937. 0 -
