COLT SP1 SN ISSUE PT ll

My Colt SP1 has a serial # SP857XX and I know I purchased mine in 1978 for the tidy sum of $278.

    I think that old retail was around $325 back then so you got a nice discount [;)]

    Mark, You are absolutely correct at least within $5.00 anyway. I picked it up from a FFL that worked with my brother. Just after I bought mine I got my own FFL. Had it until the late 90's.

    Getting within five bucks after 30 years ain't bad for this old brain of mine. I always like the light weight and easy handling of the SP-1, which was what the AR-15 was supposed to be and why it was the darling of the US Special Forces advisers early in SE Asia. After the Sporter II and the various H-BARS came along the SP-1 became something of a red headed step child and mostly forgotten until interest in these early rifles was revived several years ago. It is actually not all that easy to find a nice condition SP-1 with it's box and papers and many of these rifles were "up graded" to later specifications by owners who didn't like the idea of owning an old "out dated" AR. I still think that the SP-1 remains undervalued.

    Well to be honest you were within $3.00. The retail was $328. at the time. I wish I would have bought a few more of them but money for me was pretty tight back then and I was still into hot rods. I think I was making like $5.00 an hour. I was at a show last weekend an ran across one of the early flat tops where they literally sawed the carry handle off and then they pinned a weaver base to what was left. This one had the rifle length barrel sawed off to 16 inches and then they put a commando type flash hider on it. I'm still debating whether to buy it or not. I'm pretty sure it will be at the show again this weekend. The guy wanted $299 for it. I still remember reading an article in one of the gun mags about some company in Co. that did that and they also converted them to 6mm/.223. I had one of those to, that I bought from the Old Sarge in Natalia Texas. I sure remember a lot of those sellers of AR stuff back in the old days of the Shotgun News.

    THIS IS HEARSAY...., BUT

    in 1981 my son worked with a fellow at some chemical plant who stopped by a Gart (?) Bros., or Garth, (?) sporting goods in Boulder Co., they had a PALLET load of NIB Colt SP-1s the guy bought every one of them, i think my son said there was 25 of them and wrote out a check for just a little over $7,000, the guy must have known something.

    my son has been trying to contact him for the past 18-20 years but no info can be found on the guy.

    I like it. I like the fact that I can have as close as possible to what I carried when in the service. '74 SP1 SerNo SP 33439.

    CDNN was selling 'as new' MILSURP M-16A1 Colt uppers, so I placed one on top of my SP1. So now, I have an SP1 with a forward assist, and it's all Colt!! Barrel marked C MP Chrome Bore, the upper casting is marked C H, and there's the Colt 'bell' on the front sight base.

    To view it, except for the fencing on the right side, it's the same as I carried in the '60's. I even have the swivelling rear sling attachment!
