gunstock duplication-drawbolt holes

Anyone have any knowledge on how to accomplish this for a buttstock? What machine, jig and type of drill bit...........And for forends.......

    I use my lathe, drill bit in head stock. dead center in tail stock. place the dead center where you want the hole to end. start the drill where you want and feed with the trail stock feed.

    So it would seem that a metal lathe is required to secure the blank to the tailstock. Since the drawcolt hole is going to be 14"- 16" long what kind of bit did you use and how was wood chip & dust removal accomplished during the process? Thanks, Oz

    You can also do this with a drill press in much the same way. Fasten ("C" clamp) a flat plate (wood board), with a screw up from the bottom in its center protruding thru the top and in line with the drill bit in the chuck. Put one end of stock where you want the hole on screw point and drill bit on opposite end.
    You will need an extra long bit and they most likely won't be long enough so reverse the stock and drill from opposite end.

    MOST DRILL PRESSES DON'T HAVE ENOUGH THROAT FOR THIS BUT BUT IF YOURS DOES IT ALSO WORKS. THE STOCK ISN'T " secure the blank " SECURED AT ALL JUST HELD BY HAND (OR SRAP IT TO SOMETHING). I MAKE EXTENSIONS FOR THE DRILL BITS, JUST REMOVE THE CHIPS/SHAVINGS OFTEN.

    I have done it without problem but last time I had a lot of romance with the drill wandering - following grain of the wood. Finally succeeded starting again from other end canting, guestimated, the wandering and met part way the first hole. With smaller drill then went thru, englarging with bigger drill enuf to worry a hole for the drawbolt. All's well that ends!

    That's what I was concerned about. The bit wandering and ending up with a junk piece of wood. I need a 9/16 hole the entire length of the stock so I was going to try a 9/16 auger bit initially to rely on the diameter of the bit to keep it straight. I will do some experimenting to see what will work.I'm just trying to see what has worked for other people. Thanks for your input!
