Reloading componet question?
My dad had some lynotype, that he got from the newspaper printers. What percentages of lead,tin ,nickel are present, if any? He had intended to reload with this ,but has passed on.

Linotype alloy can vary slightly in percentage of metals but is usually something like 85% lead, 13% antimony, and 2% tin.
The lead composes the majority of the alloy and provides the mass. The antimony helps to harden the alloy and the tin makes the alloy more flowable to help it fill out the mold cavities. When a bullet is removed from the mold it has a lustrous finish on the bullet making it look like it was made from silver.
I have linotype poured into ingots that I have used for years to make cast bullets and it is an excellent material. Linotype makes one of the hardest bullet alloys there is - much harder than pure lead or lead with tin. In fact, for most uses the linotype alloy maybe too hard and many bullet casters will mix it with pure lead to soften the mix.

Linotype is great stuff . It will cast about .0005 larger then wheel weights because it fills the mold better. This alone may reduce leading in a bore because undersize bullets will gas cut along the side of the bullet. 0 -

Linotype is great stuff, but I like to mix it with more pure lead (50% 50%) because I don't need the bullets so hard. And the linotype goes further. 0 -
