bring back luger help-pics
a guy brought this gun in to me today to ask me what i think it is worth, i am not very good at pricing older military items like this, it is apparantly a g.i. bringback p38, it has the german military markings. the first photo is the back of the holster. i couldnt get a good enough picture of the right side close up of the german markings but they are there. the last picture is written evidently is the name captain in the army who brought the pistol back. there are 4 places that i see the "iron eagle/cross"(whatever you call it) stamp and under 3 it says 359 and 1 it has a swastika. any help is appreciated.

It appears to be a "First Varation", AC 45, in excellent condition, if it's all matching and the bore is in good shape? With what appears to be a real nice holster, ( as long as it hasn't been cut or screwed with?).
My WAG, $700 to $1000. Hold on to it though, things are in the toilet now, couple years down the line it will just be worth more. You'll never lose money on something cherry like this.0 -

could you explain a little more?? please. i see the sig line of the poster above looks like a luger also, explain the differences to me if you would. i have posted questions on here before and the user rufe-snow seems like one of the most knowledgible people on here and he didn't say there was a something wrong with what i said, so i am wondering and seeking knowledge. please tell me the difference???????[?]0 -
What you have is a Walther P-38 that fires 9mm Luger.
The P08 Luger is a different pistol that also fires 9mm Luger.

And, just so that you can provide complete information.....the P38 was designed by Walther. During WW2, they were made by several manufacturers who stamped their factory code on each gun. The gun pictured has AC on it, indicating it was made by Walther; they are considered the most desirable P38's, in general. (byf is Mauser, cyq is Spreewerke.)

your header was incorrect to say it was a luger..the subject body was correct with the p38...if all match including the holster with capture paper...it will for sure bring a premium but not near the same as a p08(luger) would..due to the collector market for both models....look for past auctions to see if something similar comes to the forefront..the Luger has a much more built in Mystique as a ww2 collectible and are highly prized as all matched with documentation.....as suggested hang on to till the market revives or just keep it as the odds of finding another will lessen over time 0 -
shootuadeal...you have received some good feedback from the experts on your AC 45 Walther P-38. Some questions doe arise however. Hard to tell from your photos if the #'s match on the pistol. If they don't, big hit on value. And the stitching on the holster looks too good. Check it under a black light to see if it is the real deal (animal is correct; synthetic is new). More photos would help. You don't mention the magazine(s). How many? Numbered to the gun? Correct P-38 mags could bring up to $100+. A correct P-38 holster could bring as much as $200+ in great condition. You don't mention capture papers...if you have those a big positive plus on value. As you have been told, this is not the market to sell this rig (but a great one in which to buy!). So I would keep it for a better day. On a good day, with a collector, the entire all correct rig could bring as much $1100 IMHO. Good shooting! 0 -
this gun is actually in a group of guns a customer bought from a rather old guy, he wanted one out of the collection but the old man said he had to buy all of them if he wanted any. there were no guns in the collection that were less than 50 years old. some of the other were a colt police positive, a dutch beamont rifle(now i have two in the store,odd), an old iver johnson top-break, etc.
as to the questions about the walther, i have 0 doubts that it is original. there are no capture papers, though i will ask the customer to find out if the old guy might have them. there are two mags with the gun, both marked "P38", one magazine has the same iron cross with the same "359" under it, the other has "WA1" under it. i see three places where the serial number is, the slide, frame, and barrel assembly, they all match "4750". i would grade the gun at around 95%-98%.
thanks alot for your answers, i am always amazed at the knowledge of the people on here, thanks alot for all the help you have given me since i have been on here and for the help in the future(i have a friend that wants me to put an old revolver on here for your evaluation, he says it is a "mauser" made in the 1800's, i dont have a clue what it would be so ill go get it this weekend and post pictures on monday probaly)0
