30 06 Scope?

Just purchased a Smith and Wesson i bolt 30 06 and I am looking to put a scope on it. What do you guys recommend for a scope? It will be used for deer and coyote hunting. The furthest I will be shooting with it will be 300 to 350 yards. Thanks

    A variable with 2X or so on the low end and 9X or so on the high end should work. I have found no need for the 50mm objective scopes even though they make shooting in lower light possible. They are just too large and clumsy looking for me.

    Take a look at the article in American Hunter at americanhunter.org and use the search term "holdover reticles", for good information and comparison of a number of scopes offered with this type of reticle.

    I would agree with Herschel above, about the lack of need for 50mm objectives. I have several of these, and I do not believe that most shooters or hunters gain much with them. Further, the big objective requires the scope to be mounted higher (unless you have a Leupold with the cutout) which precludes a strong cheek weld, which is important in accurate shooting. A strong and consistent cheek weld helps to preclude parallax problems and inconsistency.

    Further, while I have many 30mm tube scopes, I also do not believe that most hunters gain much from them either. They are heavier, and more expensive.

    I would stick with 1 inch tubes, and up to about 40 or 44 mm objectives. However, I walk up a lot of jacks, and I rarely have my scope set at less than 5X, even for close runners. Based on this, I see little need to go below 4X on the low end.

    Hello and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    First off I would go with the 3-9x, 3-12x, or 4.5-14x range for power. Just aids in being able to hit well at longer ranges. If you cant tell where your crosshairs are, how can you hit well? I would start with the Burris brand name, with the Fullfield II model, and progress up from there. I have Nikons, and like them, but their warranties stink.

    I agree a fullfield II is a good scope for a deer/elk/yote rifle inside the ranges you think you'll be working..

    3-9 would be my pick, but there are several models.. If you shop around you can find fullfield II scope packages that come with free stuff, Like a rimfire scope, bipod, or spotting scope.

    A bi-pod is always good to have handy.

    I like Warne QD rings.

    I agree, Burris Fullfield II, great optics, very durable and holds zero. I bought mine for a Savage 111 .30-06 My 3-9x40 ballistic plex came with a free garmin gps for around $230 with tax. Didn't have any use for the gps so I sold it for $80 on a local classifieds website... Total = $150

    For the best scope at the least cost, buy a used Burris or Leupold in a 2-7, 3-9, or 4-12 variable with a 32 or 40mm objective. Both these have good warranties just in case you buy a rare "lemon". I've never been hurt or lost a cent buying one of these scopes on the used market. A new one would be great, but will cost you a lot more.

    I agree with TWalker on the used scopes issue.

    If you are discerning, and willing to spend just a little time, you can probably find an excellent Leupold that is 15 or 20 years old in new condition for $150 or $200, perhaps less.

    Try the classifieds, pawn shops, gunshops, and gunshows. I see good ones all the time for under $200.

    All above are good advise. (especially the Burris Signature rings) I would add Sightron to the list of good choices. Below is a link to a good spot to save some money on scopes. My current pick on there now would be the Sightron 4-16 for $320.
