what the heck is this?????

hi guys i got a question for you. i bought a ton of reloading stuff at an estate sale in this stuff i also got a bunch of gun parts ect. anyway one of the things i found was an item marked marbles no 166 i dont know if i can add a picture here on not but this looks almost like an adapter so someone could chamber a pistol round in a rifle. anybody here of these???? just trying to figure out what this is

  Without a photo, I certainly can't say for sure.
  
  From your description though, it sounds like what is called an "auxiliary chamber." These were made for exactly the purpose you describe and that is to allow the chambering of a smaller caliber cartridge or shotshell into a firearm of larger bore size.
  
  Unlike today, people at the turn of the century were actually concerned with being prudent and using less resources. So the auxiliary chambers came into fashion which actually did allow smaller less expensive cartridges to be fired in larger rifles or shotguns. Of course, the auxiliary chamber had to fit the firearm and bore size.
  
  The British military would even use these for practice to minimize the cost of ammunition in their 303's. They were manufactured in a wide variety of calibers and gauges. Today, they are mostly collector items.
