short magnums
what is the opinion on all these "short magnum versions' of long standing cartridges?

Those short magnums are not only good, and efficient, but are extraordinary when used properly in the right launching platform. After I worked over my Model 70 SS Ultimate Shadow, in 25 WSSM, it will knock the eyes out of a nat at 200 yards. The 7MM and 300 RSAUM, and WSM's are winning 1000 yard competitions. They all excell for hunting in a good platform. What else would you like to know??? The 223 and 243 WSSM's appear to be headed for a short life expectancy though.

I think they are just fine.
However, let me say this: My longstanding big game rifle is a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in 7mm Weatherby Magnum, that I bought new in 1976. I think that the 270, 7mm, 300, and 325 WSMs are beautiful. I also believe that the RSAUMs are beautiful. But, are they beautiful enough to persuade me to spend at least $600, or likely much more, on a new, quality rifle? So far, they have not been beautiful enough to cause me to do that.
Further, if I had a nice .270 Winchester, I would not likely be persuaded to dump it for a .270 WSM, or a 7mm RSAUM.
But, for someone who does not have a rifle that he likes in those calibers, then by all means, consider them.0 -
I recently sold all my short action magnum rifles and am staying with the "classic" magnums. It is my opinion that all the short magnums except for the .300 WSM will become obsolete in the next 10 years. Even today, ammo is readily available only at the larger gun stores or on-line, and is bringing premium prices. If you handload and are not concerned about resale rifle prices, I think the short magnums have a lot of merit, but if you shoot factory ammo only or already own a good magnum, I'd leave them alone. The exception of course is the .300 WSM. 0 -
My favorite 1000+ yard is a very nice 7mm WSM 700 custom in an AICS.
It shoots in the .3s all day.
My favorite hunting rifle is a Model 7 in 7mm WSM.
They are efficient and accurate.0 -

My opinion is that they are more efficient than the old standard cartridges. Somewhere between 5-10 gr. less powder for the same bullet vs. the old standard. Most cases, equal velocity. I've felt they are more accurate out of the box due to their not having a belt and headspacing off that. Although, reloaded belted ammunition can be made to be every bit as accurate.
My bottom line: I hope they are here to stay. I also have one in 7 WSM and it's serious long range performer.0 -

I have a Savage 12BVSS in 300 WSM and a SIG STR in 300 Win Mag, both fairly heavy target rifles. Neither my shoulder nor the targets can tell the difference. I like them both, probably no real reason for both to exist but it did give me an excuse to buy another gun - which is probably why they both exist. [;)] 0 -
I believe the short magnum versions were spawned when manufactures (Winchester) saw the potential in accuracy achieved by the PPC cartridges in the short fat case allowing for short actions that are stiffer and inherently more accurate. The sharper shoulder angle design (thanks to P.O. Ackley) allows higher powder capacities thus magnum loads. The PPC cartridge holds every record from 100 to 600 yards in the world. When shooters can put 25 shots inside a 1/4 1nch at 200 yards, others notice. 0 -

"My opinion is that they are more efficient than the old standard cartridges. Somewhere between 5-10 gr.".........some maybe, .300 win mag. and 300 wsm are ballistic twins. the .300 win mag actualy gets better 'milage' (more fps/gn of powder)

I would really like to see a Mauser that will shoot a 3" group at 1000 meters.

Yes, they may be more efficient.
Yes, they may offer *slight* potential accuracy advantage.
Yes, shorter action can have some other advantages (like tiny decrease in gun cycle time).
But if you consider decreased availability and increased cost of ammo, I think these advantages are going to be more theoretical than actual for the vast majority of shooters.
The gun may be able to shoot 3" groups at 1000 yards. . .but not only can *I* not do that, I don't need to do it, I'm not willing to expend the time and energy working up a load to do it, and 99% of shooters are probably in the same camp.
A few less grains of powder per round is good. . .but powder is still pretty cheap, and that by itself isn't reason for most shooters to get excited.0 -

Well most are hype but IMHO, the 25WSSM the 7mmRSAUM and the .325WSM may have some promise in as a hunting or match round.. 0
