AK-74 Advise
Thinking of buying one since I have a bunch of ammo. There seem to be a few U.S.A. assembled from new receivers and some imports. Any suggestions?

Don't think you are gonna find any real imports, although you may find a Saiaga that has been converted to PH, etc.
If you have a bunch of the 5.45x39 ammo, perhaps an AR upper in it?0 -
I found a Cugir II that was imported as complete rifle, (97 import), I debanned it and it is a very accurate and reliable rifle 0 -
I'm sure there are a few guns floating around that were imported before the ban on such, but apart from the "coolness" factor (and likely increased cost), I doubt they offer any real advantage over one of the more recent domestic builds.
The rebuilds onto American made receivers are, like all these things, going to be as good as the parts used and the builder.
Still, if you consider that AKs are literally built in caves by Chinese and Afghani peasants with hand tools, you gotta figure you can't go TOO wrong with a gun assembled in the USA using good parts.
I'd say the only thing to be careful of is to buy one from a dealer/builder that will stand behind their product if it doesn't work right out of the box.

That Lancaster arms one looks pretty good to me. . .(but at the time of this post, its sold out!).
I don't know how difficult it might be to convert the 10 round Saiga to take double-stack mags, but if you could do that, it would probably be pretty good too.0 -
I have an Interarms and am very pleased with it. It is the Polish Tantal with the side folding stock. I really like the caliber and am planning on purchasing an AR upper in it. The magazines for the 74's can be scarce at times, so I would stock up on as many of them as I needed now. Overall I am happy with the Interarms and it has very good fit and finish. The action is pretty tight and has a decent trigger (for what you are buying). I researched the 74s a good bit before I bought one and the Interarms was about the top of the line. DO NOT BUY THE CENTURY!!!! 0 -
I like Arsenal Inc. for an all a round AK. Also you may want to stay far from WASR styles unless you like mag wobble. The ergonomics of the AMD65's side folding stocks are usually described as, ouch! I also like the under-folding stocks that go under the gun & not the side such as the Romanian under-folder(non-WASR)or Yugo under-folder. You might like custom builds that are done up as pistols & skip the rifle concept. Look for one that has deep receiver dimples in the mag well. The 7.62 cal has more available parts & firing pins seem stronger. All AK styles are priced way too high for what they are, a cheap(not in the U.S.), simple, disposable combat spray weapon. Try zeroing a scope in and adjust it to a different range and see where the shots go usually way off center. You may expect a 1 year warranty for most builds. One other thing, go with steel mags & don't look back. Why steel? Because many of the plastic ones have fat feed lips that hold the rounds too far in the mag so the bolt may not grip 'em off entirely from the mag causing a round crush jam. Best of luck. 0 -

+1, I think an AR upper in 5.45x39 would be better than a AK.0 -

+1, I think an AR upper in 5.45x39 would be better than a AK.
The upper will probably cost more than an entire AK, and will likely be less reliable but more accurate.
Whether or not its "better" depends largely on what you want to do with it.0 -
The arsenal saiga AK-74 would be my choice from whats on the market now, Keep in mind the guns are reasonable, but mags are hard to find and expensive..
Kavar has the specs if you wanna check them out. I bet you could find a brand new one on here for less then $1000.0 -
I bought a romy wasr2 from Aims about 4yrs ago when they went for 300.00 and I have 3-4000 rds through it not a hick-up. Plus mags for it have dropped from 40-50 a piece down to 15-20. 0 -

I would rank them as follows
1. Arsenal Saiga.
2. Interarms Tantal
3. Century Wasr 2 - Sar 2
4. Various other manufacturers of Bulgarian 5.45 rifles.
As mentioned above stay away from the Century Tantals. They keyhole with surplus ammo and only shoot Wolf.0
