7mmBR question

a friend of mine just picked up a Rem xp-100 that has 7mmbr as the caliber. but the guy gave him 7mm-08 dies and about 100rounds . my question is are they the same or when loading do you use the 7mm-08 dies or what? Thanks for any help

    7mm BR is shorter than the 7mm o8 which is a necked down Win. 308

    the 7mm o8 dies will not work for 7mm BR

    These two photos give you a rough approximation of the size relations between the two cartridges.

    That's as close as I can get it without resorting to a lot of work.

    The 7mm Benchrest or 7mmBR is about 1.52" in case length and 2.375" OAL.

    The 7mm-08 is 2.035" case length and 2.8" OAL.

    Both can claim to be derived from the Basic .308 Win. case since both have the same basic case diameters as the .308 Win. and the 7mm-08 being the same length approximately.

    thanks for the answers nononsence ,and wild bunch guy. the 7mm-08 ammo goes right into this gun ,could it have been rechambered ? how could i find out?

    It sounds like it's been re-chambered. There should be a stamp on the left side of the barrel showing that. If not you know the 7mm-08 fits and that certainly won't do any good for the shooter let alone pistol if 7mm BR's are chambered and fired.

    Based on your question you might take it to a gunsmith and have him check it out just to be sure.

    Yes it's possible since it's marked '7mmBR' and '7mm-08' fills the chamber.

    "how could i find out?"

    You have three options readily available:

    - Call the seller and get the whole story about the XP-100 from him.

    - Go to Brownells website and order some Cerrosafe. This is an alloy with a low temperature melting point used for casting chambers. Cast your chamber per the instructions.

    - Find a gunsmith to handle the chamber cast for you.

    Personally, the guy who sold this pistol without telling your friend about the chamber is an idiot. Your friend is a little suspect also because he didn't make any connection with the dies, ammunition and barrel marking so he could ask questions. Lots of alarm bells should have gone off on this transaction.

    Don't do anything with this firearm until you have resolved what the chamber is and if it's safe with the proper headspace. If the barrel hasn't been marked correctly, what else might be wrong?

    thanks everybody you are so helpful. the gun will not be fired until he takes it to the gunsmith !
